How do I add or subtract integers (or rational numbers)?
To add, there are 2 rules: a) if the signs are the same, add the numbers and keep the same sign, b) if the signs are different, subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value and use the sign of the number with the larger absolute value. EX: -51 + -25 = -76 and -99 + 123 = 24. To subtract, there are 3 words to remember, ADD THE OPPOSITE, then solve it like any other addition problem. EX: - 12 - 52 = -12 + -52 = -64 and -47 - (-73) = -47 + 73 = 26.Back to Top
