SUBJECT NEWS
READING/LANGUAGE ARTS - The week of Jan. 4-8 we will read a selection from
the text concerning the environment, Beyond the Horizon.
LANGUAGE- We are working on verbs! While this may seem familiar, it's still
tricky. Students must be able to identify verbs and decide on noun/verb
agreement as well as use correct verb tense. This week's focus is helping
verbs. Many students find this very challenging. Please look over graded
papers with your student. Following oral and written directions is critical
to success in school and language arts!
MATH - Students should review multiplication tables in order to work more
efficiently in this unit. Look for games under the links button.
SPELLING - For this week, we will work with words following the vcccv
pattern.
SOCIAL STUDIES - Students will quiz on Week 13 of Daily Geography Friday.
SCIENCE – Students are working with magnets, and received one to experiment
at home with.
Homework In General:
READING - Review vocabulary every night using the purple folder. The
vocabulary and skill we are working on is found under Links, Family
Letters. Review story on Thursday nights when we read a story from the
textbook. Workbook pages are assigned as needed for practice. Check
Scroggs's Scribbles for the story or novel we are currently reading.
Students should choose books on their reading level for indepedent reading
every night. Students should aim for a minimum of 30 minutes nightly.
SPELLING - Pretests are given on Mondays. Students are to write words
missed on the pretest three times each. Each night after Monday, students
are assigned workbook pages for practice. Practice should not be removed
from the spiral workbook.
SOCIAL STUDIES - Students have a workpad labelled D.G. We answer questions
for the week on Monday and Tuesday in class and for homework using the
textbook.
Students are able to correct their answers on Wednesday when we check
orally, and study for the remaining days of the week. D.G. tests are given
on Fridays, Thursdays if we have a 4-day week. I do not test D.G. on 3-day
weeks.

Role of the School
The St. Tammany Parish School Board and its employees in the St.
Tammany Parish Public School System are charged with providing high-quality

Be prepared for class with appropriate working materials and completed

Maintain a positive attitude.
Conduct themselves in a safe and responsible manner.
Role of the Home
Most agree that "the children's first and best teachers are their
parents." The School System recognizes that student achievement is impacted
greatly by the level of parent participation in a student's education. The
value of a strong partnership between school and home is immeasurable, but
sure, and parents or guardians are asked to adopt these basic practices to
help school personnel work with students.
Maintain regular communications with school teachers and school officials
concerning their children's progress and conduct.
Ensure their children are in school, on time, every day.
Promptly report and explain to school officials any absence or tardiness.
Assist and require children to be neat and clean.
Notify school officials of any problem or condition that affects their
children or others at school.
Discuss report cards and school assignments with children.
Assist children in assuming responsibilities at school.
Maintain for school officials up-to-date home, work, and emergency telephone
numbers and all other emergency and health information throughout the school
year.
Send children to school ready to learn.
