Homework

The students are getting organized and are getting better at writing
down assignments from the board. Homework will usually consist of a page
from their spelling lesson each night. Please make sure that your child has
completed the whole lesson by Friday and is ready to take the unit test. It
is a good idea to give your child a practice test on Wednesday or Thursday.
Your child can then concentrate on the words that he/she did not know and
get
ready for the actual test on Friday.
Your child should also practice reading his/her story from the reading
text and study the weekly vocabulary words. A comprehension and a
vocabulary
test will be given on Friday. This week we are reading "Grandfather's
Journey".
All homework should be completed in the class work composition
notebook. Your child should have written the vocabulary definitions in
class
in his/her notebook as well.
We have taken at least three comprehension tests now, and I have
noticed
that some students are having a difficult time with some of the
comprehension
questions. I find that many of the children are able to answer simple
recall
questions, but many are confused by questions that require critical
thinking. Higher level questioning will be used more as your child advances
to a higher reading level and gets in higher grades. I will supply some
questions that your child can copy in his/her notebook to help him/her
improve in this area. Please go over the story with your child every night
and see if his/her answers match the content in the story.
