Lesson 1 – Ruby the Copycat

Vocabulary words – Student friendly definitions

1. trudged – If you walked slowly as though your feet were stuck in mud, you trudged.

2. gushed – When you were excited about something and talked a lot about it, you gushed.

3. coincidence – When the same things happen at the same time, it is usually a coincidence.

4. pleasant – Something that is pleasant is enjoyable and makes you happy.

5. modeled – If you modeled something, you showed it so other people could see it.

6. murmured – If you murmured something, you said it softly so people could hardly hear it.

7. loyal – Someone who is loyal sticks by you in good times and bad.

8. recited – If you recited a poem, you memorized it and then spoke it aloud.

9. frustrated – When you try and try to do something and cannot, then you might feel

frustrated.

10. imitated – If you copied what someone did or said, you imitated him or her.
 

Lesson 2- When Eddie Met the Author

Vocabulary words – Student friendly definitions

1. conquer – When you conquer something, such as a problem or a fear, you win against it

and overcome it.

2. resistance – When you feel resistance, you do not want something to happen.

3. assembly – An assembly is a group of people who have gathered for a reason.

4. plenty – If you have plenty of something, you have more than enough

5. dismiss – To dismiss is to give permission to leave.

6. squirmed – If you squirmed in your seat a lot, you kept wiggling around as if you were uncomfortable.

7. patchwork – Patchwork is cloth made by sewing together small pieces of different fabrics.

8. autographed – If you autographed something, you signed your name on it.

9. ponder – When you ponder, you take time to think about an idea.

10. anticipation – When you feel anticipation, you feel excited because something is about to happen.
 
Lesson 3
  1. proper – Something that is proper is the way it is supposed to be, or correct.
  2. boarding – When you are boarding someone, you are giving that person a place to live for a while.
  3. literacy – Literacy is the ability to read and write.
  4. diverse – If a group of things is diverse, then the individual things in the group are different from each other.
  5. chore – Chores are small jobs that you need to do but may not enjoy.
  6. certain – A certain thing is one particular thing
  7. resource- Resources are materials, money, and other things that can be used.
  8. culture – A culture is made up of a group’s customs and traditions.
  9. tutor – A tutor is someone who helps another person with schoolwork.
  10. uniform – Uniforms are clothes that all the people in a group wear so they are dressed alike.
 

Lesson 4

Vocabulary words – Student friendly definitions

1. persevere – You persevere when you keep trying to do something without giving up.

2. confidence – If you are sure that everything will work out, you have confidence.

3. ambitious – An ambitious person is eager to reach a goal.

4. attain – When you reach a goal, you attain it.

5. talented – A talented person has the special ability to do something very well.

6. apply – When you apply for a job, you are asking for work.

7. research – Research involves getting information about a question or topic.

8. invention – An invention is something completely new that someone has made.

9. hinder – When you hinder someone, you make it difficult or impossible for them to do something.

10. disappointed – You are disappointed if you are unhappy about the way something turns out.
 

Lesson 5

1. viewers – Viewers are people who watch something.

2. survive – To survive is to remain alive, even after great difficulties.

3. camouflage – When something has camouflage, it blends into its surroundings.

4. concealed – Something that is concealed is covered up so it can’t be seen.

5. independent – A person who is independent is someone who does things on his or her own.

6. donated – Something that has been donated has been given away for free.

7. media – The many ways that people communicate, including newspapers,

magazines, and television, are all part of the media.

8. feature – When reporters do a special report on a topic, the report is called a feature.

9. image – An image is a picture of something or someone.

10. popular – Something that is popular is something that many people like.
