ELEMENTS   OF   LITERATURE

  1. Plot: The series of related events that make up a story

  2. Character: a person or animal that takes part in the action of a story, novel, poem, play etc.

  3. Setting: the time & place in which the events of a story, nevel, poem, etc take place.

  4. Conflict: A struggle or clash between opposing characters or between a character & himself.

  5. Resolution:   the solution of the problem/conflict

  6. Climax:   The point in the story that creates the greates suspense (usu before the resolution.)

  7. Foreshadowing: The use of clues to suggest events that have yet to happen in an work of literature

  8. Flashback: An interuption in the action of the plot to tell what has happened at an earlier time.

  9. Audience: An assembled group that listen to (or read or watch) a work of literature.

  10. Purpose: the intended meaning

  11. Voice: The author's

  12. Tone: The attitude a writier takes towards an audience, object, setting, or charactor.

  13. Point of View: the vantage point from whic a story is told; 1st person Pt of view: written from charactor's pt of view, uses I, we, us, me, etc. 3rd person pt of view: written from narrator's pt of view--uses names, they, them, those, etc--one charactor's thoughts & feelings are known. 3rd person pt of view-omniscient--ALL charactor's thoughts, feelings, etc are known. Uses names, them, they, those, etc.

  15. Genre: a distinctive type of literature

LITERARY   TERMS--FIGURATIVE   LANGUAGE

  1. Figurative Language: words or phrases that are not intended to mean their literal definition, but something different

  2. Simile: a comparision between two dissimilar things using like or as

  3. Metaphore: a comparison between two dissimilar things saying one IS the other.

  4. Personification: a figure of speach in which a nonhuman (usually inanimate object) is given human charactoristics.

  5. Idiom--An expression specific to a culture in which what is meant IS NOT the literal meaning of the words.

  6. Irony: a general contrast between expectation & reality

  7. Hyperbole: an extravagant exageration

  8. Imagry: Language that appeals to the senses--taste, touch, smell, hear, etc

  9. Symbolism: A person, polace, thing, or event that has a meaning seperate from its original meaning

  10. onomotopia: words that echo their sound

  11. alliteration: repetition of the same or similar consonent sound

  12. oxymoron: a phrase made of a combination of contradictory words that do not literaly have the same meaning as the phrase

  14. Refrain: the "chorus" of a poem--multiple lines that repeat
