PLANNER & BINDER

Requirements

Planner:

Must have daily assignments recorded for ALL major subjects DAILY

Must have one parent signature WEEKLY

Must include all Creekside events & related dates, as given by school administration, teachers, or the Gator Gazette

Is required to be completed correctly for restroom or locker usage during class time

Is about half of a weekly study skills grade

Binder:

Must have dividers clearly labeled

All papaers are to be SECURED in the CORRECT divided section

All pages are to be headed, including a title

Notes should be on pages, as they were given in class

Pages with torn holes should be repaired with hole reinforcers

Is about half of a weekly study skills grade

Is required whenever binder is presented to Ms Adams or another student

WRITING RUBRIC

Composition-- CLEAR main idea: (4pts of 12 on LEAP) (~32% in class)

~~Did you stick to the main TOPIC ?

~~Include enough SUPPORTING DETAILS/information

~~Did you STAY FOCUSSED and not stray from the topic?

~~Did you make sure that everything is in an ORDER that makes sense?

Audience awareness & style: (4 pts of 12 on LEAP) (~32% in class)

~~Is your VOCABULARY interesting? vivid? precise? exact?

~~Does the style of your SENTENCES VARY? or are they all simple & boring?

~~Are you writing in a TONE that is OK for the AUDIENCE? Did you use inappropriate slang?

~~Does your voice, your PERSONALITY show through? Do you use humor or personal examples/stories?

Conventions of Language: Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, etc (4 pts of 12 on LEAP) (~36% in class)

~~Did you write in COMPLETE SENTENCES?

~~Is your WORD USAGE (verb tenses, subject/verb agreement, pronouns, homophones, etc.) correct?

~~Are your MECHANICS (indentions, capitilization, punctuation, paragraphs, etc )correct?

~~Is your SPELLING grade level appropriate?

Spelling Contract:

25 points TOTAL are due BEFORE the test on Wednesday.

IF you turn the contract in BEFORE the pretest, only 20 points are required.

*Entire contract cannot come from here **Highlight/Underline spelling words ***Elements of literature are: toungue twisters, alliterations, metaphores, similes, idioms, personification, etc

Contract MUST come from AT LEAST TWO sections.

Pretest & errors 5X each

ABC Order

Divide words into syllables

Write the dictionary pronounciation of each word

Write the part of speech of each word

Scramble the letteers of the words & solve a firends scrambled words

Spelling & thinking page completed correctly

5 points each:

Write words 5 times neatly in script

Write words 3 times neatly AND box trace around thier shape

Draw a picture & "hide" the words in it

10 Points each PLUS 5 pts bonus in English: (90% or better for bonus)

Correctly complete the Spelling & Writing page (paragraph also)

Write 10+ clashy Newspaper Headlines using the Spelling words

Write a story, poem, or dialog using 15+ words

Write questions or sentences using all words correctly.

10 Points each PLUS 5 points bonus for Reading: (90% or better for bonus)

Correctly complete the unit's Spelling & Vocabulary page

Correctly complete the unit's Spelling & Reading page

Write 10+ elements of literature (similes, metaphores, idioms, alliterations, etc) with Spelling words

Correctly complete Vocabulary Connections pages.

Current Event requirements:

Current Science:

--Must be dated within one month.

--The article must be directly related to your curriculum. 8th grade: Earth Sciencegeology, weather, space, plate tectonics, ocean, minerals, rocks, erosion, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. 7th grade: Life Scienceliving things (animals, plants, humans, etc) & their: genetics, cells, evolution, body systems, diseases, infections, environment/habitat, etc.

Current Event:

--Must be dated within two weeks

--The article must be directly related LA, US, the World, or its leaders, wars, etc.

--Social “Gossip” type articles will not be accepted.

What to turn in for each:

The article

--May come from the internet, newspaper, or a magazine. www.yahoo.com , www.msn.com , & www.nola.com are all great internet sources, however, be sure any website, newspaper, or magazine you use is a reliable one!

--Must be a minimum of 4 paragraphs

--Must be included with the summary or summary will NOT be graded

The summary

--Most be a minimum of one five sentence paragraph.

--The summary does NOT have to be typed, but must be neat and easy to read.

--The summary should be set up as follows: Title of article, Author of article, Source of article, Date of article, Correct Bibliography Entry, & Summary of article

--The summary should include the following information: Who is involved? What happened/was discovered?

When did it happen? Where did it happen/get discovered? Why did it happen? How does this affect us?

--The summary should be proofread for grammar, usage, punctuation, & spelling.

Bibliography entry

--Must be in correct format.

--Consult your planner OR www.noodletools.com (free bibliography generator)

 

Grading:

Reading:

--75% including each of the above pieces of information (who, what, when, where, why &/or how)

--15% correct bibliography entry

--10% set up of summary correct

English:

--30%: composing: clear main idea, enough supporting details, & written in a logical order

--40%: style/audience: no slang, good vocabulary & 5 interesting complete sentences

--30%: Spelling, punctuation/capitalization, & usage

Science/Social Studies:

--Ms. Milligan REQUIRES one Current Science per month

--Mr. Cooper offers bonus points on Mondays for Current Event articles

--You can speak with Ms Campbell & Mr. Sibley as to whether or not they will allow bonus points.
