Summer Ag and FFA Activities 2017


The June 1st and June 13th Summer Ag has been cancelled.  

Summer AG Dates - June  15, 19, (20 Petting Farm at Fire Camp). July 7, 11, 12,

Drop off and pick up at the Ag Departments Classroom entrance. Student should arrive between 8:00am and 8:30am and be picked up between 2:00 and 2:10pm. Dates are subject to change make sure Mr. Peters is at school before leaving your child.

Students who have completed 6th or 7th grade Ag may attend. No cost and lunch is provided. To be on the Summer Ag Email Group sign up for News Flash on the Teacher Web site.

Summer Ag is designed to give students more hand on learning opportunities. Students are encouraged to wear old clothes. Projects for this year include finishing sprinkler system in the greenhouse, repairing the water system in Chicken Barn Building additional Small Chicken Pens, taking care of animals, repairing equipment, cleaning and organizing the shop and greenhouse and other things that need to be done around the Ag Dept. and school. We will also do a petting farm for the Bush Fire Camp on June 20th.

June 5th to 9th State FFA Convention. . We will receive our Gold Emblem National Chapter Award, Livestock Exhibition Award, and students will compete in the State AG Science Fair.

June 9 I need to know who is planning to attend the National FFA Convention

June 20 Petting Farm at the Bush Fire Camp – Students need to wear FFA T-Shirt or Spirit Shirt and Shorts.

June 20 I need to know who is planning to attend Leadership Camp. (Email, call or text)

July 17 to 19 Leadership Camp Students must have completed 7th Grade, Officers should attend. Cost $120 Bring money and overnight form on July 17th. We will leave Fifth Ward at 6:30 am on July 17 and return about 6pm on July 19th.

Forestry Team

All 7th and 8th Grade students are encouraged to be on the Forestry Team. Students will learn to Identify Trees, Measure DBH and Height of Trees, determine distance by pacing, direction using a compass, Forest Management and Map Reading.

7th Graders will learn the Forestry CDE information in class during the 1st 9 weeks so they should consider being on the Forestry Team.

May 6th Derby Day Fundraiser at Abita Springs Town Hall - $25 per couple / Food and Drink chance to win Grand Prize $1000 , 2nd Ticket $250. Live and Silent Auction. Tickets may be purchased from TPeters, Ronnie Rosser, Dean Hopper or Trent Jenkins. If you can sell 5 tickets please let me know. We also need Auction Items for silent and live auction. Please invite your friends and family to join us for this event. Please purchase a ticket even if you cannot attend.


May 12 Fifth Ward FFA Banquet – The Banquet will start at 6:00 pm. Students will display their projects and will be recognized for their accomplishments. Parents and grandparents are invited to attend. A banquet sign up letter will be sent.   


June 5th – 9th State FFA Convention in Monroe – Students participating in State Science Fair or receiving State Proficiency Awards will be given 1st priority to attend.


July 17 – 19th Area IV Leadership Camp – Newly Elected Officers need to attend Students must have completed 7th Grade to attend this event.


June and July – Summer Ag Dates will be posted on Teacher Web in May.

Students may wear Fifth Ward FFA T-Shirt, FFA Officers Shirt, or uniform shirt with good Blue Jeans or long Khakis. Students need money for breakfast and lunch.

November 1 – 6 to 7 pm Agriculture/FFA Parents and Alumni Meeting in the Ag Department.      Parents are needed to help plan the many FFA Activities that will take place over the next few months. We will discuss all of the above events.  ALL parent are encouraged to attend. FFA Officers should also attend. More information will be posted on the Ag Teacher Web site.


November 11 – 5 to 8 pm Falcon Family Fun Night and Auction. This activity is sponsored by FFA. Auction Items and bidders are needed. Parents and students are also needed to help serve Food and Drinks. Other Clubs and Classes will also make baskets and have game booths.


November 16 – 3 to 7 pm. Fifth Ward FFA Parliamentary Procedure Parent Night                           Students have been learning Parliamentary Procedure in Class. Those students who wish to try out for the Parliamentary Procedure Team need to attend and participate.  Students will demonstrate Parliamentary Procedure for their parents and others. Several Students will also practice saying the FFA Creed. We will cook Jambalaya for everyone in attendance. Parents are asked to bring snacks or 2 liters Please sign up for Email or Text on Teacher Web. If you are signed up by Oct 31st your child will get extra Beef Jerky

Fifth Ward was named a 3 Star National FFA Chapter based on our Student, Chapter and Community Development Activities again this year. This makes about 10 years we have made the top group

Katie - won 1st at State Convention and is a National Finalist in Food Science Agriscience Fair and will bring her project to National Convention.

Trilby - won 1st at State Convention and is a National Finalist in Inviromental Agriscience Fair and will bring her project to National Convention

Cheyenne won 1st at State Convention and is a National Bronze emblem winner in Plant Science Agriscience Fair.

Colt won 1st in State in extemperaneus speaking and will compete at Nationals

Colt was Elected President of Area IV this summer

Gentry was Elected Jr. Vice President of Area IV this summer

Our Parliamentary Procedure Team will compete at National Convention in October.

Horse Judging


July 11th is the State Horse Judging CDE which will be held in Gonzales. Any one who wishes to try out for the team needs to use ICEV web site to practice Halter Horses, Reining and Western Pleasure. Also watch and practice oral Reasons. We will practice horse judging on June 28 and 29


 


Forestry Team

Parliamentary Procedure Team


We will compete at the National Parliamentary Procedure CDE in October in Indianapolis Indiana. Students who competed at Parish, District or Area need to study questions, wording of motions and officer parts during the summer.


Parliamentary Procedure Practice May 18th 3 to 5 pm. 


I need to know who plans to compete at Nationals in October. Students may start selling Bed Sheets and raffle tickets to help pay for cost. We will also do the concession and sell tickets for the St. Tammany Parish Fair Rodeo Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.







Students are currently signing up for classes for next year. If a student takes Ag I (7th Grade) and Ag II (8th Grade) If the student is on the Tops University Tract. Ag II will count as a Tops Science Credit

If a student is on the Jumpstart Career Tract Ag I, and Ag II will can be used as 2 of the 9 courses needed for Welding, Carpentry, Agritechnology and many other pathways.

Students in Agriculture Classes also get the opportunity to participate in many FFA Activities on the Area, State and National Level

FFA Winter Gala December 11th from 6 to 9 pm at the Rec Center Gym

The 5th Ward/North St. Tammany FFA Alumni is hosting a Winter Gala to honor the hard work and dedication of our FFA members. All Fifth Ward students in 6th thru 8th grades are invited to attend. There will be food, drinks, and music.

 Parents are needed to bring deserts, finger foods, decorate, and help clean up. We plan to set up on December 8th and 10th. Cost: $5.00 for FFA members and $15.00 for non-members. Students can earn entrance fee by selling Market Hog Raffle Tickets. Everyone should bring canned food items for the food bank

**** Attire: Semi-formal (dresses for girls and dress pants, button-up shirt & ties for the guys)

Pig Exhibitors
Students should be staying after school or coming to school on weekends to keep pens as clean as possible. Please make sure you are keeping up with your pig payments.

ONLY Students who’s Parents are willing to help with feeding pigs, keeping the pens clean and taking care of the Chickens are allowed to keep pigs at school. Students who are showing pigs are responsible for training, sheering and other care their animal might need.  All Students who keep pigs at school must take turns staying after school to weight pigs, clean pens and other thing needed to care for the pigs. All Parents and students must come after School or on weekends to practice with their pigs and keep the Pens Clean. Parents should come at least once a week to help supervise students and help. Parents who can’t come after school need to sign up for weekends. ONLY Students who’s Parents are willing to help with the project are allowed to keep pigs at school. We must keep the barn clean to reduce the odor and make sure the pigs have the best growing condition possible.

    7th and 8th Grade Students will take turns on Weekends and Holidays feeding Pigs and the Ag Department’s Chickens

Cost of Pig Project- $550 – $200 for the pig and $350 for feed, wormier, vaccinations and Shavings. The pig must be show Quality and from a certified herd. There are several sales if you want to get your own pig.

If you want me to purchase a pig for your Child I need a Check for $250 before Sept 18th. If you keep the pig at Fifth Ward the cost for feed, wormier, and other normal care items will be $350. The feed bill can be paid in payments of $100 on or before October 10, $100 on or before November 10, and $100 on or before December 10.

October 25th to October 31st National FFA Convention.

Fifth Ward will compete in the National Parliamentary Procedure CDE Tuesday October 27th.  For the 5th year in a row Fifth Ward FFA will receive the 3 Star National Chapter award. The award will be presented about 3:00pm on RFD TV October 29, 2015. Parliamentary Procedure Team Members competing at Nationals are Chase Nevers, Shane Jarrell, Lillie Jenkins, Payton Talley, Jared Heck, Corbin Ross, John Simmons, and Lane Cowell. 9 members and 8 Adults are representing Fifth Ward at the National FFA Convention.

 

November 6, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30 Fifth Ward Falcon Family Fun Night and Auction

The Fifth Ward FFA members and parents will start serving Jambalaya, drinks and other food products beginning at 5:30.  Games will also begin about 5:30.

The Auction will include items from local businesses and theme baskets. Basket Themes will include Louisiana, Saints, LSU, Movie Night, Thanksgiving, and others.

We will have a silent auction with at twist. (If the bid changes in the last minute the last people will then be allowed to bid against each other)

We need as many bidders as possible so please invite your friends and family to attend. The Auction Tables will start closing at 6:30. We will close a table about every 15 to 20 minutes beginning at 6:30. We can use additional Items for the auction. November TBA State Forestry Career Development Event.

Fifth Ward FFA Place 5th Overall and Top Middle School at the Area IV CDE on September 30th. We will compete in the State Finals. Forestry Team members are Jared Heck, Lillie Jenkins, Lane Cowell, Barrett Williams, Emma Jenkins, Justin Nelson, Katie Nettles and Brooklyn Blossman

Attention Hunters The Fifth Ward Ag/FFA members can process your Deer or Pigs. We can cut, wrap, tenderize, and make Smoked or Fresh Sausage. Sausage .60/pound. Added Pork 1.50/lbs or bring your pork.

At the 2013 State FFA Convention Fifth Ward was recognized for being the top overall FFA Chapter in Louisiana. At the 2012 National FFA Convention Fifth Ward was recognized for being on of the Top 5 Middle School FFA Chapters in the Nation. These Awards are based on our Student, Chapter and Community Development Programs. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
