Class Syllabus

Course Description: This class introduces students to various aspects of art 
through hands- on projects, art exploration, and problem solving.   The basic 
skills of art will be utilized and expanded upon through various two-
dimensional and three- dimensional techniques.   A variety of media will be 
studied, including but not limited to, acrylic paint, multiple drawing 
techniques, hand building with clay, assemblage, charcoal, watercolor, 
printmaking, found object sculptures, and painting murals. 

Objectives:  During this course, we will study…

•	The vocabulary and the language of art
•	The Elements of Art and the Principles of Design
•	Art Criticism and Theories of Art
•	The use of media, methods and techniques used to create art
•	Historical periods and artists as they pertain to our projects

Requirements:

•	Portfolio- create, maintain and use your portfolio to store and 
protect your projects.  In regards to sculpture, your portfolio will be a 
compilation of digital images of your work.
•	Sketchbook- create and keep a notebook containing information from 
all handouts and notes taken during lectures, demonstrations, films and 
written work.
•	Participation- Be on task!  Be present for class, take part in 
discussion and make efficient use of class time.
•	Competence- demonstrated by completing all sketches, worksheets, 
homework and projects on time.
•	Responsibility- Be responsible for tools, supplies and work area. 
Clean Up as needed.
•	Be respectful of others. Ask before you use someone else’s supplies 
and never touch another person’s artwork!




Grading:
	Each assignment has a set criteria and is worth a specific amount of 
points. Students will be given full credit if all criteria have been met by 
the due date. See Grading Policy for Talented Art.  



Class Materials: The creation of sculpture invariably causes the need for 
supplies, However, I have attempted to structure my lesson plans in the most 
economical way possible.  Most of the supplies on the suggested supply list 
will cost “little to nothing”. Some examples are- toothpicks, cardboard, 
found objects, etc….

Expected Student Behavior: Students will…

•	Come to class prepared, on time and ready to work                  
•	Stay in assigned seat/work area at all times
•	Turn in all work completed and on time
•	Go to the bathroom and get water at class break
•	Work the entire class period on artwork only
•	Clean up at the end of class when you are directed to do so
•	Keep food and candy stored away
•	Keep all conversations directed towards projects, artists or critiques
•	Cell phones are not allowed

Failure to maintain a productive and educational environment can result in 
immediate consequences (detention, parent conferences, office referral, etc)

Use appropriate subject matter for all projects!
Drug, alcohol, violent or obscene images will not be tolerated. Inappropriate 
work will be confiscated and taken to the administration with a student 
referral.
