Weekly Lessons

 

ELA – GRAMMAR
 
                                                                                    Week One  (10/12 - 10/16)
   Vocabulary/Spelling - Lesson Six.  The students will continue their study of vocabulary for success by defining the first ten words of lesson six and completing the assigned activities.  A test will be administered on Thursday.    
Noun Clauses, Participles, and Participial Phrases.  A Picture is Worth a 1,000 Words.  In cooperative learning groups, students will select a picture from a magazine, book, Internet, etc. and glue it to the lower right hand corner of a sheet of computer paper that has been folded into fourths.  In the upper left hand corner, groups will write a noun clause describing the picture.  In the upper right hand corner, groups will write an adjective clause describing the picture.  In the lower left hand corner, groups will incorporate a participial phrase into a sentence describing what is happening in the picture.
 
                                                                                  Week Two  (10/ 19 - 10/23)
   Vocabulary/Spelling - Lesson Six.  The students will continue their study of vocabulary for success by defining numbers eleven through twenty of lesson six and completing the assigned activities.  A test will be given on Thursday.   
Gerunds and Infinitives.  Infinitives and Beyond!  In this challenge, students work in groups to use selected gerunds as 1) the subject, 2) the direct object, 3) the object of the preposition, and 4) the predicate noun and infinitives as 1) the subject, 2) the predicate noun, and 3) the direct object.
 
                                                                                 Week Three  (10/26 - 10/30)
   Vocabulary/Spelling - Lesson Seven.  The students will continue their study of vocabulary for success by defining the first ten words of lesson seven and completing the assigned activities.  A test will be given on Thursday.    Using Commas with Clauses and Review.  Students will revisit their literary creations from Week Three and identify the types of clauses used.  Working in their groups, they will peer edit and publish.
 
                                                                                 Week Four  (11/2 - 11/6)
    Vocabulary/Spelling - Lesson Seven.  The students will complete their study of vocabulary for success lesson seven.  A test will be given on Thursday.
   The student will review the use of comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs.  There will be a test on Friday.
Week Five (11/9 -11/13)
 
   Vocabulary/Spelling - Lesson Eight.  The students will continue their study of vocabulary for success by defining the first ten words of lesson eight and completing the assigned activities.
   The students will begin their study of Verb Tenses by writing a proposal for an invention that could make the world a better place.  The proposal will include information stating how this will be accomplished.  Upon successful completion of this task, the students will write a "how-to" paragraph using various verb tenses. 
 
Week Six (11/16 - 11/20)
 
Vocabulary/Spelling - Lesson Eight.  The students will complete their study of vocabulary for success for lesson eight by defining the remaining words in the lesson and completing the assigned activities.
The students will continue their study of verb tenses by writing and performing a comedy skit with a partner.  The final application will involve writing a biographical sketch about a person who has been an influence on their lives.
 
 Week Seven (11/30 - 12/4)
 
Vocabulary/Spelling - Lesson Nine.  The students will define the first ten words and complete the assigned activities of lesson nine.  A test will be administered on Thursday.
Students will begin their review for the second nine weeks.  Review will include verb tenses and punctuation of titles.
 
Week Eight (12/7 - 12/11)
 
Vocabulary/ Spelling - Lesson Nine.  The students will define the last ten words and complete the assigned activities of lesson nine.  A test will be given on Thursday.
 
Week Nine (12/14 - 12/18)
 
Second nine weeks exams will be given.
 


 

SOCIAL STUDIES

 

 

SECOND NINE WEEKS

 

WEEKS ONE, TWO, and THREE

            10/12 – 10/30

 

                        The students will continue their study of Unit 3 – Creating a Nation.  Chapter 6 details the “players” and the “plays” of the war.  Students will create a timeline of pertinent events surrounding the Revolution and select one key figure from this historical era for a brief biographical sketch (25 point homework grade).  A standard chapter test will be administered on Tuesday of week 2 for chapter 6 and Wednesday of week 3 for chapter 7.  Upon completion of these chapters, the students will be able to answer Guiding Questions 4, 5, and 6.  On Friday of week 2, the students will create a piece of pottery that will be fired in the school kiln.

 

WEEKS FOUR and FIVE

11/2 – 11/13

 

            The students will begin their analysis of the United States Constitution by reading, discussing, and rewriting the Constitution in their own words. 
Students will be given periodic assessments of the Articles as they are completed. 

  

WEEK SIX

11/16 – 11/20

 

             The students will complete activities associated with Civics in Action:  A Citizenship Handbook. 

           

WEEKS SEVEN AND EIGHT

11/30 – 12/11

 

            The students will begin their study of Unit 4 – The New Republic.  Chapter 8 outlines the development of the office of the President of the United States and the trials and tribulations that plagued the young country.  A standard chapter test will be administered for this chapter.

 

             

WEEK NINE

12/14 – 12/18

 

            The students will prepare for and take their nine week exams.
