Mrs. Meyer’s 8th grade honors English Language Arts classroom procedures
ARRIVAL You are expected to get your supplies ready and be in your seat by the tardy bell. It would be wise during this time to write down the homework assignment listed on the board and/or take note of what the day’s activities will be.
SEATING Sit only in your assigned seat. The seating chart will change at least once each nine weeks to allow all students to sit in different locations in the room. If you have special needs, please let me know this before I make the seating arrangement.
VISITORS When someone comes to the door, you are expected to stay seated and work quietly until I can return to teaching.
ANNOUNCEMENTS Whenever announcements are being made, everyone is to be absolutely quiet so all may hear what is being said. If someone calls into the classroom on the intercom, only the teacher is to respond.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS When I am absent, all classroom procedures are to be followed as usual. Assigned work will be checked upon my return. I expect the substitute to be treated with the utmost respect and I will promptly deal with any misbehavior upon my return.
FIRE ALARM Remain calm and quiet. Stand up in the row next to your desk. I will walk to the door and direct each row to exit, starting with the row closest to the door. Be sure to stay in a single, straight line because other classes will be evacuating at the same time. Remain with your class at all times. I will check roll on the field.
ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what work you missed, make it up, and turn it in to me. This includes both classwork and homework assignments. All assignments will be posted in the assignment notebook located on the white board. Ask me for tests or worksheets that do not appear in the accompanying folder.
EXTRA CREDIT Students will occasionally be given extra credit assignments throughout the year. Individual bonus point assignments will NOT be provided, so plan accordingly and take advantage of those points offered.
HALL PASSES You are expected to go to the restroom and conduct personal errands before school, during lunch, and between classes. Please adhere to this. You can not learn if you are not in class.
GRADED WORK You are expected to record all grades either in your planner or on the grade sheets provided, so you may calculate your grade average at any time. Various assignments are worth varying point values, but assignments will include: reading log entries; vocabulary; spelling; skills tests and quizzes; homework and classwork participation; grammar lessons; writing lessons; journal averages; Reading Counts program participation; and participation in and preparation for daily silent reading. Students should never throw away graded work. All work must be turned in on time. Any work not turned in will be recorded as a zero in the grade book.
DISMISSAL Please remain seated until the bell rings. The teacher, not the bell, dismisses the class. Do not pack up until told to do so.
GENERAL PROCEDURES REGARDING CLASSWORK / HOMEWORK
- All assignments are to be done in pencil, or black or blue ink. Papers will not be graded if in another color.
- When you finish an assignment, it is to be placed in the wooden box on the teacher’s desk.
- The proper school heading is posted on the back wall. If you forget to put your name on your paper, it will not be graded. If you use an incorrect or incomplete heading or do not label the assignment, there will be a grade penalty.
- Work that is late will be penalized 10 points (for every 100 points) every day that it is late. If you are absent on a due date, the assignment is due the day you return.
- If an assignment is not legible or done in non-standard English, it will be returned for you to redo before it is graded.
- If you finish your work early, you may sit quietly and read a book, draw a picture, or work on an assignment for another class. Please do not disturb those still working.
