FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How can I keep up with my child's grades? All students are required to keep graded assignments in their notebooks. assignments. Parents should check these weekly. A Student Progress Report can also be sent home with a student when requested by a parent. All parents should have been notified by now about how to access grades on- line. All public libraries have free computer service for your convenience. How often is homework assigned? Written homework will vary as needed, but STUDYING - the most important homework in Social Studies - can be done almost nightly. Reading will also be assigned at home from the textbook. Student vocabulary or notes from that day can be reviewed at home that night. Projects will be given several times this year, but parents will receive a handout that must be signed two to three weeks before the project is due. Are assignments accepted late? Homeworks assignments are NOT accepted late unless a student is absent. Daily Geography can be a day late (on Tuesday) with a ten-point grade deduction. Projects are accepted ONLY a day late with a 20% grade deduction. Tests are given approximately every two weeks. Vocabulary, quizzes and Daily Geography are given on a weekly basis. How will my child know what to study for a test? I always write a list on the board of EXACTLY what will be covered on a test or quiz. I do not make study guides as I give handouts of notes to keep or to copy. What should I do if my child is absent more than a few days? There are several things which you can do: 1. Call the office to request assignments which can be picked up for those days. 2. A neighbor who is a student at FJH could pick up assignments from the office if you inform them. 3. Check my webpage for daily assignments. Sometimes these must be changed as dictated by student understanding and completion. Please email if you do not understand an assignment or need a handout. 4. Check the website for: ANNOUNCEMENTS, ASSIGNMENTS, and HANDOUTS and print what you need. If this is not possible, all public libraries have internet assess which is free. 5. BE SURE YOUR CHILD CHECKS THE MAKEUP FOLDER WHEN RETURNING FROM ANY ABSENCE. Since so many grades are given each nine weeks, I do not give bonus points on an individual basis, but I do occasionally have extra credit work to offer the class. What can I do about zeroes that my child has received for assignments? Zeroes usually indicate that a student has not turned in an assignment or made up graded work. These cannot be changed because procedures have been in place since the first week of school to help students become responsible for their own work. All students are given notice and ample time to inquire about these assignments and to complete them before they turn into zeroes. My exams are comprised from the tests that have been given for that nine weeks. For this reason, all graded work should be kept in the notebooks. |
