STUDY GUIDE

FOOTBALL

The football field is 100 yards long with end zones at both ends of the
field. The end zones are where a team scores a touchdown. When a team
scores a touchdown then 6 points are awarded to that team. The team then has
an option to kick an extra point through the goal posts, or try to get into
the end zone again for 2 points. The team on offense has several players.
The player that throws the ball is the quarterback. The players that run
with the ball are the running backs. The players that catch the ball are
known as receivers. The players that protect the quarterback and running
backs are known as the offensive linemen. When a team is on defense the team
has defensive linemen, corners, ends, guards, tackles, linebackers, and
safeties. All of these players try to tackle the person who has the ball
preventing them from getting into the end zone. When a player is tackled
they are called down. The offense has four downs to get 10 yards or the
defense gets the ball.

VOLLEYBALL

The way a volleyball game is scored is called rally scoring. A point is
awarded to one of the teams on every possession. In rally scoring a team can
earn a point when the other team does not return the ball, hits the ball into
the net, hits the ball out-of-bounds, or hits the ball illegally. A type of
illegal hit is a carry. This is when the ball is caught and the thrown over
the net. A team can only hit the ball three times before it must go over the
net. If a team hits the ball more than three times then the other team gets
a point. Also, a player can only hit the ball one time in succession. If a
player hits the ball more than once in a row then a point is awarded to the
other team. The server must stand behind the service line when serving. If
the server crosses the line with his or her foot then it is considered a foot
fault, and a point is awarded to the other team.
