MATH

Unit Description

Students are introduced to volume as a measure of filling and to surface area as a measure of wrapping.  After developing strategies for measuring the surface areas and volumes of rectangular prisms, students use their new knowledge to develop strategies for measure the surface are and volumes of cylinders, cones, spheres, and irregular solids.  They also study the relationships between surface area and volume.  This unit will also stimulate and sharpen students’ awareness of symmetry and to begin to develop their understanding of the underlying mathematics. 

ELA

Unit Description

This unit focuses on reading, comprehending, interpreting, and analyzing a longer work of fiction through a variety of comprehension strategies and writing modes. Fiction elements of character, setting, plot/subplots, point of view, and theme are identified and analyzed; and a comparison/contrast of narrative elements is included. Writing text-supported responses provides an opportunity for student application of a writing process. Participation in ongoing literature groups allows for the development of social skills. Vocabulary development and grammar instruction occur within the context of the literature and student writing.

 

Social Studies

Unit Description

 

This unit focuses on the historical eras beginning with Louisiana’s first inhabitants and extending through the Louisiana Purchase. Exploration of the arrival of the Europeans and their struggle to gain control of North America and the Mississippi River is included.
