When is homework due? What should we do if we lose the homework sheet?

Homework is due on the day after it is assigned. Monday’s homework is due on
Tuesday; Tuesday’s homework is due on Wednesday, etc. The homework sheet is
usually sent home on Friday. It will also be posted on our website every
Friday. Homework should not take very long. I encourage you to let your
child work independently, and check the work when it is done. Students are
expected to turn homework in on time. You may help your child by seeing that
it is packed in the homework folder in their bookbag. If it is lost, you can
access it on this website. If that is not possible, you need to send in a
note requesting a replacement. Worksheets assigned with homework can also be
replaced with a note. You may wish to have your child complete written
assignments on the weekend, as long as they are turned in on the due date.
This may help if you have a busy weekday schedule!

How do I notify the school of transportation changes?

All requests must be in writing. Please use a full size sheet of paper. The
note should include the child's full name, teacher's name, date, nature of
change, and parent's signature. The note should be given to the teacher who
will forward it to the office for approval.

Should I be concerned about behavior grades?

Behavior grades of "E" and "S" are excellent! An "N" notes that there is
room for improvement. A "U" usually indicates there has been a
problem with discipline. If it is a habitual problem, you will be contacted.

What should my child do with their buzz bucks?

The Honey Hive opens on Thursday for students to spend their Buzz Bucks.
These have been earned for following school rules and exhibiting positive
behavior. Many students like to keep these in a "Buzz Buck Pouch" which can
be purchased from the school office. Buzz Bucks can not be replaced if they
are lost. The colors change each nine weeks. Students need to spend them by
the Thursday following the end of each 9 weeks.

When should we pay lunch money?

Lunch money should be paid weekly or monthly. It must be in an envelope,
with the information the cafeteria requires: Name, Teacher, Amount, and Code
number. You do not need to separate breakfast and lunch money. Students
receive a lunch menu at the beginning of each month, and it will also be
posted on the school website.

Does my child need a snack each day?

We will eat a light snack every morning at around 9:45. Please try to send
something every day. You may send a drink box or water bottle. Students are
not allowed to share their snacks (except birthday treats).

Can we order books from book clubs?

I will send home order forms from Scholastic at the beginning of each month.
If ordering, please make out your check to the company. You will be able to
place Scholastic orders online and pay with a credit card. Information will
be sent home with the first book order. The students enjoy receiving their
books in class. We receive free classroom books and materials when you
order.

How do we fill out the At Home Book List? What if an AR book is read at home?

The first “At Home Book List” is included in the welcome folder. It has
spaces to write the names of 10 books that were read at home. Please sign it
when completed and return it to school, and a new list will be sent home.
Chapter books will count as 3 books (write the title and skip 2 lines).
Please do not include books that your child read at school. Each student is
required to turn in at least 1 book list a month. Please check the last
column if the book is an A.R. book. Students should take the AR test on a
book they have read within one day of finishing the book. Please send in a
note with the exact book title or send in the book the next school day. Be
careful because some books have similar titles. Students will receive credit
for any book read at home. Books can be read independently, or you may read
to or with your child. You will receive a form telling you what level books
your child should be reading. You can locate Honey Island’s Accelerated
Reader list on the following website:
http://www.arbookfind.com/
The top readers in AR and At Home Reading will receive awards at the end of
the school year.

What is the school's policy on visitors and volunteers?

We encourage parents and family members to visit our school and be active.
All visitors and volunteers are required to sign in at the front office and
wear an identification badge while on campus. Bring your driver's license.
This is a state law and will be enforced for your children's safety. Please
sign in and out using the volunteer book in the front office, because the
PTA logs volunteer hours. This includes chaperoning field trips and helping
with parties. Unexpected classroom visits and hall conferences are not
allowed at our school. If you need to see your child or drop something off,
the office will send for them. If you are planning on meeting your child for
a cafeteria lunch date, you can notify the cafeteria by phone, or send in a
note. It would help if you have exact change for your lunch.

When should Library books be returned?

Our Library Day is TUESDAY. Please help your child to see that their
library book is returned so that he/she may check out a new book. If they
finish it sooner, send it to school. Students may exchange AR books that
they have tested on every day between 9:00 & 11:00 for a new AR book.

What should I do if my child is absent?

If your child is absent, you need to send in a note when they return to
school. Excused absences require a doctor’s note. Please see that your child
is in school on time. The bell rings at 8:20, and students are counted as
tardy if they arrive after 8:30. Instruction begins as soon as students walk
in the door. If your child is being checked out during the day for an
appointment, please send in a note notifying me of the time.
