Dear Parents,

      	We have many activities scheduled for the 3rd nine weeks.  Please 
send in a shoe box. We will be making an in class diorama in Science. 
 
        We will also be doing a Science unit on ecosystems.  We will be 
making a terrarium for plants. If you have an aquarium you are not using and 
would like todonate it for the months of January and February please let me 
know.  We will be making an ecosystem for a snake for it.  And, if you would 
like to donate a turtle, we will make an ecosystem for it, too.

       Listed below are the skills we will cover for the month of January 
       
READING - 
        Review "genre" - fiction, realistic fiction, non-fiction, photo essay 
        review elements of a story - character, plot, setting, problem, 
solution
        Vocabulary words - how to decode - every syllable is a phoneme; 
phonetic patterns: every syllable must have a vowel, magic or silent "e", vcv 
pattern words, open syllables, closed syllables, "r" controlled vowels, 
consonant diagraphs, and blends
       
LANGUAGE -
         review nouns (singular and plural)
         review verbs (past, present, and future tense)
         review the verb "be" - am, are, is, was, were
         review helping verbs - have, has, had
         review parts of a letter - heading, greeting, body, closing, and, 
                  signature

         review "prefix" (these phonemes are added to the beginning of a word

MATH - 
         review odd and even numbers
         review addition and subtraction fact families
         review money - penny, nickle, dime, quarter, half dollar
         review time to the hour, half hour, 15 minute, and 5 minute
         review pictgraph, tally graph, bar graph
         review measurement - linear (inch, foot, mile - millimeter,       
              centimeter, and kilometer
         addition with regrouping - understanding the terms addends, place 
              value (ones, tens, hundreds), regrouping
          INTRODUCE fractions - understanding fractions are a part of a whole
            and the term numerator and denominator
          shapes - there are flat shapes - circle, square, triangle, 
              rectangle, rhombus, pentagon, hexagon, octagon
          geometric shapes - they are 3 dimensional shapes -cube, cylinder, 
              rectangular prism, cone, square pyramid, sphere
