FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
When is homework due? What should we do if we lose the homework sheet? Homework is due the day after it is assigned. Monday's homework is due on Tuesday; Tuesday's homework is due on Wednesday, etc. The homework sheet is sent home on Monday. It will also be posted on this website. I encourage you to let your child complete their homework independently. Then check it, help with any errors, and sign it when it is completed. Please help develop the routine of packing all homework and folder in their bookbag. If the assignment sheet is lost you can access it on this website. How do I notify the school of a transportation change? Your child usually goes home from school each day on the bus or as a car rider. Sometimes it schedule may be bus rider on Mon., Tues., Thurs. and a car rider only on Wed. When ANY CHANGE happens in the "usual" way that they go home for that day, the request must be in writing. Please use a full sheet of paper. The note should include the child's full name, teacher's name, date, what the change needs to be (include the other student's name and bus number), as well as a parent's signature. The note should be given to the teacher to be forwarded to the office to document. Please remind/encourage your child to turn those notes in to the teacher in the morning when she calls for any notes or notices for her or the office. A note at 3:15 makes for a frantic dismissal. What should my child do with their Buzz Bucks? The Honey Hive is open during lunch recess on Thursdays for students to spend their Buzz Bucks. These have been earned for following school rules and exhibiting positive behavior. Many students like to keep these in a "Buzz Buck holder" which can be purchased from the school office. Buzz Bucks cannot be replaced if they are lost or washed in a pocket. The colors change each nine weeks. Students need to spend the old color by the Thursday following the end of the nine weeks. When should we pay lunch money? Lunch money may be paid weekly or monthly. It should be sent in an envelope clearly labeled with the student's full name, teacher's name, amount being paid and the child's lunch card number. You do not need to distinguish between breakfast money and lunch money. Students are given a lunch menu at the beginning of the month and it is also posted on the Honey Island website. Does my child need a snack each day? The class is permitted to have a light snack each day. Please send healthy snacks. Please slice any fruit and send in a plastic bag. Students are not allowed to trade or share snacks except for birthday treats. After eating, the students use the restrooms, wash their hands, and get a drink from the water fountain. Can we send in treats for a child's birthday? What a great way to celebrate a birthday at school! Please send a note prior to the date. You may send in a treat (cupcakes or sliced cake) and napkins that will be shared at snack time. If you desire to send drink boxes also, that's fine. I will occasionally send home book club or computer software forms from Scholastic Books. Please make your checks out directly to the book club. We receive points toward classroom books and materials when you order and students enjoy receiving books in class. What about AR books read at home? Each student has an AR Folder. Books read at home are logged on the form in this folder. The students will take the test the following day at school. They must select "Read To" or "Read With" if the parent read all or part of the book. If your child read the book to you, then "Read Independently" is chosen. You will receive a form informing you of a range of levels at which your child should be reading independently. You can locate the reading level and point value of any book using the title at this site: http://www.arbookfind.com/ What is the school's policy on visitors and volunteers? We encourage parents and family members to visit and be active in our school. All visitors and volunteers need to check in at the front office and wear an identification badge while on the campus. Please have your driver's license ready and sign in the volunteer book. This is a state law and is enforced for your child's safety. The PTA logs volunteer hours which includes tutoring, chaperoning field trips, and helping out at class parties. Unexpected classroom visits and hall conferences are not allowed at our school. If you need to see your child or need to drop something off, the office call your child to the office area. Can I meet my child for lunch? You are always welcome to join your child for lunch. Lunchtime for our class is from 12:40-1:00, followed by recess from 1:00- 1:25. If you plan to buy a school lunch you can phone the cafeteria, or send a note so they can include you in their count when preparing lunches. It would be helpful if you can have exact change for your lunch. Federal laws prohibit "outside" foods, such as McDonald's, brought into the cafeteria. When should library books be returned? Our class has a library once a week on Tuesday mornings. Students can exchange their library books then or before school begins on Mondays through Thursdays. Please note no morning exchange on Fridays. Please help remind your child to return their library book so they can check out a new one. What should I do if my child is absent? If your child is absent, you need to send a note when they return to school. Excused absences require a doctor's note. What time should my child be at school? The bell rings at 8:18 so classes may begin at 8:20. Students are counted as tardy if they arrive after 8:30. Instruction begins as students enter the classroom, so please have your child at school on time. Students can be brought to school starting at 7:50. If needed, HIE offers a day care before and after school. Contact the office for this information. Should I be concerned about behavior grades? Behavior grades of "E" and "S" are excellent! An "S" grade is most common. An "N" denotes there is a need for improvement. A "U" usually indicates a more serious problem with discipline, usually repeat offenses. If it is a habitual problem, you will be contacted. |
