About The Teacher

My name is Danel Petry. New Orleans was my home from birth until 1982 when my
husband, Randy, and I decided to raise our children in Slidell instead of the
city. We've been very happy here. I graduated from the University of New
Orleans with degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education. My first
teaching experience was at a private school in New Orleans, followed by almost
4 years in Chalmette. I began teaching in St. Tammany Parish in 1983 as a
first grade teacher at Little Oak Middle. I am happy to say I have taught
first, transitional first, second and third graders at Honey Island since the
first day the doors were opened. It is definitely my home away from home.
I have two adult children who attended HIE and our feeder schools. My daughter
lives in Lafayette, and my son is in Slidell. Hershey, the most spoiled member
of the family, is our family dog.
Outside of school, I enjoy reading, camping, or doing any type of hand
stitching. I also continue my education in technology.
In the second grade I decided to become a teacher. I always enjoyed the
facial expressions of someone whom learned something new or when it
"clicked". This is still my favorite part of teaching. My goal for your son
or daughter is teaching them to become a logical and critical thinker. Then
they can solve any type of problem. We learn thinking strategies through many
different activities: whole group, cooperative groups, or individual
assignments: centers; and technology, including the Promethean Board. By the
end of the year you will be surprised by your child's accomplishments. Each
year I look forward to a fun filled year of exploring and learning with my new
students. Please feel free to contact me by a written note, an e-mail, or a
phone call to the office if I can help you in any way.
