I have been involved in education for 34 years, most of this time spent as a
classroom teacher and some as an administrator of educational programs. All
of my years in the classroom have been devoted to young children, from pre-k
level through kindergarten.
As of December, 2008, I have now earned two Master's Degrees (MEd), one in
Early Childhood Education and a newly completed one in Educational Leadership
and Taining. I am proud to say that I was singled out as the Distinguished
Graduate Scholar from among the entire graduating class of SLU's Department
of Education and Human Development. I am certified in the State Of Louisiana
for Early Childhood Education, Early Intervention, Teacher Leader and
Educational Leadership.
For those wanting to know details, my resume is provided below.
Having worked in early childhood education for so many years, it should be
obvious that I have a bias towards the responsibility of working with very
young children. It is my belief, backed by volumes of research, that these
are the most crucial years in a child’s development. This is the time of life
that children learn about themselves and how to relate to the world around
them. It is at this age that children form a concept of themselves as “ok”
or “not ok,” the time when they begin to pay attention to, and model, the
adults around them, and the time when they develop their valuation of school
and learning, in general. Therefore, extensive thought and planning has gone
into the way we interact with the children, the modeling of behavior that we
are providing, the general attitude about life and learning that we are
instilling, and, of course, the developmental appropriateness of the learning
activities that we are providing.
Working with very young children is a true delight to me, and since coming to
Lyon Elementary I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with three
paraprofessionals who care as much as I do about the influence we have on the
children with whom we spend each day. Our mission is to nurture in our
children the skills they will need to succeed in life. This includes academic
skills to succeed in school, eating skills to maintain a healthy body,
interpersonal skills to know how to treat the people they will meet in life,
and organizational skills so that some day they will be able to identify
their goals and aims.
