The following is an explanation of each book report for the year. The presentation dates will be on your homework contract at least 3 weeks in advance. Examples of each type of report will be demonstrated in class. Books chosen should be approved by your teacher and should be on near your personal reading level.

**We will address the genres of poetry, folktales, and drama in class. **

August-This book report will be a written Bio-Poem of a character from a fictional book of your choice (from your summer reading?!?). There will be a template provided. Make a visual collage of the chosen character (i.e.: Circle &/or Bubble Map with pictures, clippings, words) or design a (model) T-shirt that describes the character. Collage/T-shirt must have a minimum of 5 descriptors. Bring in your book to class to share.

September/October-This book report will be a (realistic, historical or science) fictional book of choice. The puppets should be child produced and should portray the main characters of the book. The puppets may be made from a variety of materials…be creative! Make sure you use details in your puppets, like yarn, crayons, markers, etc. When presenting this report the puppets will help the student to retell the story in his/her own words. The puppets should be stored in a bag with the title and author written on it. The books should also accompany the child on the assigned book report date.

NovemberThis report is on a non-fiction book. The information should be presented as a type of visual like a poster, power point, etc. The completed poster should contain a picture of the subject, minimum of 5 interesting facts, and 2 descriptions. (Suggestion: research an animal – include habitat, diet, predators/prey) As always, the book should be brought to class on the day of the presentation.

December No book report/ enjoy! J

January/mid-February- This book report will be the genre, realistic fiction. Realistic fiction is a fictional book that has real-life type characters and situations; opposed to fantasy. A diorama/Mardi Gras float will be the visual used to show the setting of the story. Use a shoe box or other media to create the setting of the story. Main characters should also be placed within this setting. Once again, the title and author should be neatly displayed on the diorama and the book should be brought to class. The presentation will explain the story’s setting and a brief oral summary of the book.

Mid-February/March – This book report should be a book of students’ choice (preferably a fictional chapter book). This will be student’s choice of what they might want to do to share the book. As always, the book should be brought to class on the day of the presentation.

  • Written report- it must be at least three paragraphs in length. The first paragraph should contain the title author, main characters, and setting of the story. The second paragraph should give a brief summary of the story. The final paragraph should tell why you did or did not like this book and your favorite part of the story. Written book reports maybe typed (not necessary). This will be read to the class. I expect this not to have many grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Creative report – it is to be a creative way to share the book with everyone.(Examples): Make a commercial for your book and “sell” it to the class; make a mobile; write a letter to the author telling him/her about why you would recommend it to others; write a song about the story-and perform it; make a comic strip about the story; paper bag report= put items in the bag that tell about the story & characters (like your “Me Bag”). Pass your idea by your teacher to get approval prior to report day.

April/May- Since our last unit in ELA is centered around biographies/author studies, this book report will be a biography (a book written about a famous person ~athlete, movie star, inventor, president, etc.). Children are to dress as the famous person that he/she read about. Costumes need not be anything elaborate. Clothing and props should be items that you have at home or that can be easily made. Costumes will be brought to school on the day of this report and children will change into their costumes. When presenting this report students will tell about the life of his/her famous person in first person; speaking as though they are really that person. Covered in this report should be where they were born, their birthday, about their childhood, what made them famous, and a few interesting facts about their life. Write at least a paragraph or make a presentation to be used on Report Day.

As a conclusion in May, we will write our own autobiography and tell what we have learned this year. We will share as part of Author’s Corner.
