KEEPThis page is for all students that are involved in the KEEP/Enrichment
This Fall 2009 semester in the KEEP program we will begin with multidisciplinary and innovative unit about civilizations and mini-societies. We will start with the story Weslandia by Paul Fleishman. In this story Wesley constructs his own alternate world when his garden produces a crop of huge, strange crops which provide him with clothing, shelter, food, and drink. This helps him create his own civilization and changes his life. We will discuss that one person started every civilization at one time – developing own language, writing, and mathematical systems. Students will be allowed to establish their own society, elect or create their own government, print their own money, create their own laws, and even establish their own businesses. This experience will help students understand more about entrepreneurship, economics, government, law, math, and ethics. Students will be able to work cooperatively and actively with problem solving activities to find creative and workable solutions to the numerous problems that occur in any society. Ach student will have a voice in the decision making process through our group meetings & shared discussions. As a result I feel that students are anxious to learn about our government and how it operates both economically and legislatively. We are planning on having a Market Day at the end of this unit. Students are to make homemade items from their created society to sell using their own monetary system from their society. I want to foster entrepreneurial qualities and creative ideas in students. They should be encouraged to think in terms of products and services for this culminating activity. There will be more information close to the end of the unit for this.
I want to thank you in advance for your active interest and involvement that will enhance your child’s learning. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to call/ask. |
