This week we are learning Language Arts Unit 4: Nature Watch Weekly Theme: Recycling Skills – We are working in our 4th reader. Our stories are getting a little more challenging to read. They are longer, have more descriptive vocabulary and demand a little more out of the reader. Some skills we will be working on are forming an opinion, comparing and contrasting characters and events and using story clues to determine author’s purpose or ideas. Our weekly story is “June Robot Cleans Up” and we will use this story to practice our reading skills. In spelling, we will work with words that have the long u sound. We will practice making inferences based on what we have read. We will learn to use was, were, has and have correctly. Our units are part of the Guaranteed Curriculum of St. Tammany Parish. We use the Harcourt Treasures Reading series. Math – We will continue in Chapter 7: Counting to 100 this week. We will identify numbers as odd and even. We will identify the numbers before and after a given number. We will identify the numbers between two given numbers. We will solve paired number pattern story problems. We will learn ordinal numbers first through twentieth. Our lessons are part of the Guaranteed Parish Curriculum. Our math book is published by Scott Foresman. We also use the programs Everyday Counts, Today’s Math and Investigations. Social Studies/Science – We will learn about magnets this week. We will explore what makes an object magnetic. We will learn the meanings of attract and repel. We will learn about the poles of a magnet. Our units are taken from the state’s curriculum along with some units that correspond with the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Treasures Collection. Notes & Reminders: Snack time is becoming problematic. Please send a small nutritious snack that your child can easily open and eat within 5 minutes. I am taking a lot of class time to open snacks and water bottles, wipe up spills, etc. Right now it is taking us 20 minutes to get through with snack time. Please do not send yogurt, pudding, candy or any type of drink that isn’t water. Also, please just pack 1 snack. I have students that are taking out 3 & 4 items to eat at snack time. This can’t be accomplished in 5 minutes. Thanks for your help! Independent reading will be expected in this quarter. Please read with your child nightly to ensure that they have enough practice to be successful in their independent reading. FISH FOCUS – RAISE AND WAIT. Please label all jackets, hats and cold weather clothes!
