Literacy and Language

Read daily with your child - ask questions, name details, and characters in the story,
retell the story together

Encourage writing/drawing daily - allow your child to explore their own creativity
- write THEIR WORDS when they explain/talk about their pictures and writing

Find letters and words (particularly letters that are in their name)in magazines,
books, environmental print (cereal boxes, candy wrappers, food and drink containers,
signs on the road, etc.)

Make up rhyming songs/games using real or nonsense words (Rhyming is proven
by research to be the first component to literacy and reading)

Read and review Nursery Rhymes and books with repetitive and rhythmic text

Encourage speech when your child is requesting wants or needs

Provide visual support/pictures and objects paired with words/print to encourage
language

PLAY! Use lots of words and language concepts when playing with your child
