Again this year, we will have an Art Club at MJHS. The members will meet
after school approximately twice a month on Tuesday afternoons from
2:35-3:35. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014.
Membership will be a limited to 15 students because of available space for
creating and storing projects. 8th grade students who were in Art Club last
year will be given priority. That still leaves plenty of room for 7th grade
and other 8th grade students. Students should have good academic standing and
no behavior issues. Once the application process is complete, there can be a
waiting list in case some students drop out or move during the year. Students
must be picked up at Mandeville Junior High School’s Villere Street Entrance
no later than 3:40 pm on club meeting afternoons.
Some of the projects that will be addressed in Art Club are: Clay bowl
creation and decoration for this year's Empty Bowl Project here in Old
Mandeville; possibly, Art contest submissions; ongoing Art Portfolio
preparation which may include work in a variety of media; and Poster creation
Student completes and returns the application.
Parent(s) complete and sign the parent permission/transportation/slip and
return it with an $8 supply fee. A schedule of Art Club meetings will be
posted on my TeacherWeb.

Statements about the Value of the Arts

“You see, I am an enthusiast on the subject of the Arts. But it is an
enthusiasm of which I am not ashamed, as its object is to improve the taste
of my countrymen, and to increase their reputation, reconcile to them the
respect of the world and to procure them its praise.”
Thomas Jefferson

“Aristotle believes that when created nobly and performed with masterful
technique, art can foster moral growth and overall improvement of society.”
Aristotle, 384-322 BCE, Greece
The Daily Book of Art, p. 89

20th Century artist, Hans Hoffman states that:
"Nature's purpose in relation to the visual arts is to provide stimulus-
not imitation....From its ceaseless urge to create springs all Life-all
movement and rhythm-time all light, color and mood-in short, all reality
in Form and Thought."
