Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
How do I get to see my counselor?
Get a pass from your teacher or just come to my office (it'S in the 300 hall). If I'm not in, sign up on the door and I'll call you from class as soon as I get a chance. If it is an emergency, LET ME KNOW so I can get you IMMEDIATELY.Back to Top
What if I want an appointment with my child's teacher?
Call the counseling office (649-3620) and follow the prompts to get directly to my office. If I do not answer, please leave a message for me to return your call. This year each teacher will have a voice mailbox that you can access to get a message directly to your child's teachers. Call my office if you do not know their extension number and I will get it for you. Another way to contact the teacher is through their school e-mail address. You can either go to the NHS website to get it or to www.teacherweb.com and communicate directly with them. Then, if you still need a conference, we can schedule one with the teacher you need.Back to Top
I want to make a schedule change...how do I do it?
Depending upon the reason for the change will help determine if it can be made or not. Repeating a class, for example, guarantees a change. Just because you may not like a teacher, does not guarantee that a change can be made. I will do my best to help you out. Some changes just cannot be made. I can't help you unless you ASK...so please do so. Please keep in mind that we are unable to make ANY changes AFTER ten days of each semester and only those students who are in incorrect courses will be changed.Back to Top
ANYTIME. Just get a pass from your teacher or come by the office if it is during lunch or before or after school.Back to Top
Should I take the ACT or SAT tests?
There is nothing wrong with taking these tests now. It will give you a good idea where you stand. I suggest taking ACT as many times as you wish/need in the 12th grade. Remember PSAT is where you will qualify to become a National Merit Scholar and is only given in the fall. Practice in the 10th grade and qualify in the 11th grade.Back to Top
How do I know if I will qualify for TOPS?
During the year, the student is given a TOPS calculation sheet for them to figure out where they stand in relation to TOPS. FILL THIS OUT. It is the best way to know where you are. If you need help, you can go to the TOPS website and they can calculate your score for you. Also, remember that the parish college counselor will be here at NHS a full day this year. USE HER. She is wonderful and is willing to help in any way possible. Be sure to have your parents fill out the FAFSA form. This is your application for TOPS and for ANY financial aid for college. After graduation, you need not do anything. The state TOPS office will receive your transcripts and figure this out for you. Remember, your TOPS g.p.a. is NOT your overall g.p.a. found on your transcript. Your score comes from the TOPS core curriculum which is 17.5 credits.Back to Top
It is up to you and your parents to find out what scholarships you may qualify for. Search in many areas. If you have any questions, speak to Ms. O'Regan, the parish college counselor. She is there for you to answer any questions you or your parents might have. Remember to search EARLY and complete your applications EARLY. Most scholarships are due before the end of the year. DO NOT LET THE DEADLINES CREEP UP ON YOU. BE PREPARED AND GET BUSY!!!Back to Top
What do I have to do to get into college?
First, you must decide WHERE you wish to go. You may go to that school's particular web site and click on new admissions. Follow the directions online and apply to the college. You should receive some type of notification from the school telling you what you need to do to complete the application process.Back to Top
How can I get a transcript sent to a college?
Fill out a transcript request form (get one from me or from Ms. Nancy in the front office). Fill this out completely including the address where you wish the transcript to be sent. Also check off if you need your ACT scores sent, include teacher recommendations, or anything else that you may need. Sign the request and attach $2 or $1 (depending on what you need) and turn it in to Ms. Nancy Osborne in the front office.Back to Top
How much time do you need to complete my college application?
I ask that you give me at least 2 weeks to complete your request.Back to Top
What do I do if I want you to write me a letter of recommendation?
Please give me a resume of all your accomplishments, honors, awards, clubs, leadership roles, community service, etc. It will help me to write a more complete recommendation for you. I don't want to forget something important that you may have accomplished. Again, I ask at least two weeks to complete this.Back to Top
