Study Skills

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO IN ORDER TO MAKE BETTER GRADES? READ THE SUGGESTIONS
BELOW, FOLLOW THEM, AND SOON YOU WILL SEE HOW MUCH BETTER YOUR GRADES CAN BE.

     1. Each night, re-read the notes you have taken in class that day. Do
this for each subject, even if you do not have homework that evening. The
more familiar you are with the information, the more likely you are to
recall it when it is needed.

     2. Do your best to SCHEDULE your study time. Try to schedule at least
2 hours daily to do homework and review lessons of the day.

     3. GET ORGANIZED! Use a student planner or calendar to keep track of
all your assignments and due dates for papers, projects, etc. Keep a
separate folder/notebook for EACH class. Have all the needed materials
available so that you are not looking around to find stuff you need.

     4. Find a quiet, comfortable space with good lighting to do your
work. This area should be free from distractions and a quiet space where
you can concentrate on the topic at hand. (Laying in bed is NOT CONDUSIVE
to learning effectively.)

     5. If you must have some type of "background noise" in order to keep
your thoughts concentrated, play classical music at a low volume. It has
been proven that doing this rather than T.V. or popular music allows the
brain to retain better and recall when necessary.

     6. If you are absent, make sure YOU get your make up work as soon as
you return to school. Complete ALL assignments as soon as possible so that
you do not get too far behind.

     7. Make sure to pay attention in class. Take good notes and ASK the
teacher for help if you do not understand something. Others usually are as
confused as you, and your asking questions not only helps you, but also
helps others.

     8. KEEP A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Remember, you
do not have to like a teacher in order to be able to learn from them.

9.Attend the homework help sessions sponsored by the BETA club. These
are FREE and can help a great deal. It is often useful to hear the
information from another person. All students learn differently and often
someone's rewording of a topic can make all the difference. Also, ask your
teacher when they have help sessions. Most teachers do this at least once a
week.

    10. Attend the GEE PREP and the ACT PREP classes when they are offered.
These too are FREE! This not only can improve your scores, but also helps
your grade when you attend at least 2 sessions. Points can be added to your
final 9 week grade on your report card!
