The children are doing so well with reading while pointing to the words. They
are touching each word as they say it and moving their finger from left to
right across the page. We are now signing the stories while we read them. I
am very proud at how the children have learned sign language. They know how
to count to 10, the colors, and most of the alphabet. I will put the signs
for colors in their reading journal soon.
Please start discussing with your child what your family Thanksgiving
traditions are. Do you go “over the river and through the woods” or do you
stay at home? Do you play games after dinner or watch football? Talk to your
child so that they can share with the class what they will do at Thanksgiving.
Thursday, Dec. 10 is our Christmas program. Girls need to wear a pretty
Christmas dress with red in it, white stockings and a red bow in their hair.
Boys need to wear a white dress shirt and black pants. Mrs. Hill will provide
the rest of the costume. Every year the program is AMAZING... you will be so
proud of your child!
Our Class Christmas party will be Friday, Dec 18th @ 9:00. Our theme is
Christmas Morning. Kindergarten students and teachers will wear pajamas to
school. We will make breakfast & hot chocolate and open presents. I will send
home more information soon. Parents are invited too!
Happy Birthday!

Friday, Oct 30 is Storybook Character Day. Children may wear costumes to
school. The costume is supposed to be from a children’s book. If you already
have a costume, I’m sure there is a book out there somewhere to go with the
costume. I do NOT need to see the book (hint, hint, wink, wink!!!) Please
make sure your child is able to use the bathroom on their own while they are
in costume. You might want to bring an extra set of clothes for your child to
change into later in the day, does not have to be a uniform. No scary or
bloody/gory costumes allowed.
Did you know…?
M&Ms were developed so that soldiers could eat sweets without getting their
fingers sticky.

Thank you to all the parents for coming to your conference. I look forward to
continuing the conferences next week.
Please note: Next week, the children do not have school on Monday due to
Teacher meetings. Also the children get out early Wednesday, Thursday, and
Friday for Parent/Teacher conferences.
Today is the end of the first 9 weeks. It has gone by so fast. The children
are learning so much. Please keep working with your child at home. Reading
journals started coming home this week. Please make sure these get returned
every Friday so that I can glue new stories in them.
This week we have been learning about community helpers. Community helpers
are people that work in our community and help make our community safe,
healthy, clean, or provide a service or product, such as: firemen, police
officers, doctors, dentist, sanitation workers, bus drivers, factory workers,
construction workers, sales clerks, bank tellers, teachers, etc. There are so
many of them to name.
If you are a police officer (patrol, motorcycle, or K-9) or a fireman,
doctor, dentist or if you know one that would be willing to come by our
classroom with the equipment needed to do your/their job, please let me know.
The children would love to see and hear about these!

I have been testing the children on their 1st 9 week report card skills. I am
so proud of the children with how much they have learned. But we still have a
long way to go! It is amazing what the children will learn in Kindergarten.
This week, the children have been practicing reading while pointing to each
word. They count the words on the page and only say the words they see (They
can not just “make up” words). This is difficult for them because they are
use to looking at pictures and making up a story to go along with the
picture. They will get better with practice and we will have plenty of
practice!
Reading journals will begin coming home Monday. These are very important
books. Through out the year, we will add stories to it. These are stories
that the children are familiar with and have read before. Please do not lose
this book or let anyone color or write on it. Keep it safe! Reading journals
are to be returned on Friday and will go home again on Monday.

right.
* Albert Einstein’s parents thought he was mentally handicapped because
by the age of 9 he still wasn’t speaking fluently.

This week the children have been counting syllables in words or counting the
parts of words. For example: finger 2 parts, elephant 3 parts, kindergarten 4
parts. Practice at home so your child can show you how smart they are! I have
listed our letter sounds with the keywords below. Please practice with your
child at home.
I can see.
I can hear.
I can taste.
I can smell.
I can touch.
a apple /ă/
b bat /b/
c cat /k/
f fun /f/
m man /m/

When telephones were first started to be placed in homes, people answered
them with “Ahoy”.

We have started reading! The children are beginning to read high frequency
sight words and simple sentences. Please practice reading these at home:
see my I the you
I see the cat.
I see the cow.
We have started our “Smart Bodies” healthy children’s program which promotes
healthy eating and exercise. Each day at lunch, I encourage the children to
take a bite of their fruit and vegetables. I am so proud of them! All the
children are trying at least one bite and most of them are eating all the
fruit and veggies. If your child brings a lunch from home, please try to
include a fruit or vegetable in their lunch. The lunches our cafeteria makes
are yummy and healthy.

This week we have been reading the big book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. It is a
silly story about the alphabet. We have been talking about letter partners
(matching lowercase and capital letters such as S s or M m etc…). Every
letter has a letter partner and the children need to able to recognize and
match all capital and lowercase letters. The children decorated the first
letters of their name and hung it on our Chicka tree.
We have started a healthy children’s program here at NWE promoting healthy
eating and exercise. Every-day at lunch, I check to see who has taken at
least taken one bite of their vegetable and/or fruit. If they try one of
them, I give the child a sticker. It is amazing to see how many children will
actually eat all of the fruit and vegetables. For children who bring their
lunch from home, I look to see if they have something healthy (applesauce,
fresh fruit, veggie sticks, salad, etc). They will also get a sticker for
eating their healthy foods.
My dad says I am an endless source of useless information because I love
little trivial facts. I think he is jealous because I always beat him at the
game “Trivial Pursuit”. So I thought I would share a few facts, just for fun:
Did you know…?
The chocolate chip cookie was invented in 1933.
Potato chips were invented in Louisiana in 1853.
Squirrels live longer in captivity than they do in the wild.

Parents: Please teach your children how to tie their shoes. Too much class
time is being taken up by me having to stop to tie shoes. This can be their
homework over the holiday. After August, I have a saying in my room about not
knowing how to tie shoes: “Find a friend or tuck them in”. If your child does
not know how to tie shoes, they can find a friend to tie their shoes or tuck
the laces into their shoe. I will post a chart in my room. Any child that can
tie their shoes can put their name on the chart for all to see.
