Announcements

                                            January 4, 2010

Dear Parents,
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday, and are as anxious
to get back into routine as Lynda and I are! The first half of our year has
flown by, and we are going to try as hard as we can to put the brakes on the
second half…..but I’m afraid it will go by in warp speed too!
Pre-K children grow and mature so much during this year. We are always
amazed at how MUCH they have grown when they walk through the classroom door
in January. All those little light bulbs go on, routine is set in place, that
LOVE of learning is embedded deeply, and we have “oodles” more to learn and
experience. Enjoy every moment…..I’m sure I don’t have to tell you now how
special the pre-k year is….for your child and YOU!
This week our letter is Ww and our new puppet friend is Wacky
Walrus….remember SHHHH!!!!!! Wacky lives in a wigwam and has a friend named
Wiggly Worm. Wiggly likes to hide from Wacky in the most unusual places! Be
sure and prompt your little one to “weep” like Wacky!!! Too cute!!!!! Our
projects will be a Winter W, pin punch Ww, a beautiful snowflake, a “freeform
snowman” (this is my favorite!), a mitten project, and a few more “snowy”
projects to round out our week.
In math we review our numbers 1-10. We will sequence snowman magnets,
make patterns with penguins and snowflakes, make sets on our snowflake mats,
and we will even have snowmen with numbers on their hats that we have to put
the correct number of buttons on their tummies! We will sort a pile of
mittens and gloves, match the sets, and then graph whether we prefer to wear
mittens or gloves. Lots’ of “snowy” fun going on in math this week!!

In science we will discuss our new season, winter. We talk about
clothing we wear in the winter, winter animals, and even explore what happens
to water in the freezer….and where does that water go as we watch it disappear
during the week!!! Learning about a solid, liquid, and gas is SO exciting!!!
Friday is WILD WEST DAY!!!! This is always a FAVORITE in pre-k! Your
child may wear his/her western wear as we all have a “rootin’ tootin‘” way to
celebrate the letter Ww. Please no guns or holsters….we try really hard to be
a peace loving group!!!! If your child wears boots, please send a pair of
tennis shoes to change into….remember we have P.E. that day! Thank you!
January book orders go home today, and you may also order online. All
book orders will be due Friday, and if you send in the form….no cash please.
Now….on to the next set of reminders!! Mardi Gras is the next BIG
event!!! We will need 6 decorated wagons to hold throws for our parade. If
you would like to decorate a wagon….please just drop us a note. We will also
need volunteers to pull wagons….and also volunteers to help put beads in those
little hands to throw to the OLPS cheering crowds!!! Just let us know….and we
will put you down on our “yes” list!! If you have Mardi Gras beads that you
would like to donate…..please just drop them by the classroom. We will take
beads, toys, candy…..just anything that will fit into our little hands to
throw. The boys and girls wear Mardi Gras colored shirts and jeans that
day….and tennis shoes. Sr. Virginia Lee always prays for beautiful weather,
and of course we all know her power of prayer! Lots more info and reminders
to come your way….just wanted to give you an early heads up in our new year!
Cold weather is definitely here. Please send your child to school on
cold mornings with a heavy coat. Our first recess is at 9:15, and the sun has
not warmed us up yet! I know lots of times your little one will argue about
wearing that “big” coat….just send it….I promise you Lynda and I will have it
on them! Please remember to put names on all sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets,
and coats. Thank you!
If you have any questions or concerns, please just drop by or email us.
Just a reminder about “how your child gets home”…..if he/she changes their
normal way…..please write us a note. We stick all our notes on the wall to
remind us…and then we will remind your child. Early mornings and dismissal
time can get hectic…..it makes it much easier if we can refer to a note. Thanks!!

                                            Diane and Lynda
