Summer Reading Requirements

Summer Reading  2017 - 2018  

We will be requiring each student entering first through seventh grade to follow the directions as specified by each grade level below. The children will be required to take Accelerated Reading tests on the books in their level and the grades will be given to the teachers for some form of evaluation/credit for the first quarter. They will have an opportunity during the summer to take the AR test on June 26th & 27th and again on July 31st & Aug 1st. They will also be allowed to take their summer reading test during the first week of school. 1st grade- Students entering first grade should review their sight word list that went home at the end of the year. Copies of the word lists will be kept in the front office for incoming students. 
2nd grade- Students entering second grade should read a minimum of two books this summer. One must be an Accelerated Reading book leveled according to their STAR TEST results. Students will be required to pass an AR test on this book. For the second book, students should choose a book leveled according to their STAR test results. Students will complete a book report in class the first week of school on the second book. In order to complete the book report they should memorize: the title of the book, the author, the main characters, and a summary of the book. 
3rd/4th grade- Students entering third and fourth grade should read a minimum of two books this summer. One of the books must be an Accelerated Reading book. They will be required to pass the AR test on that book. Student should choose a book leveled according to their STAR TEST results. In addition, the student will be asked to write a book report on one of the books at the beginning of the school year. 
5th grade- Students entering fifth grade should read a minimum of 2 books leveled according to their STAR TEST results that will earn them at least 8 AR points. 
6th/7th grade- Students entering sixth grade should read a minimum of two books leveled according to their STAR TEST results that will earn at least 10 AR points. Students entering seventh grade should read a minimum of two books leveled according to their STAR TEST results that will earn at least 12 AR points. 

The student's individual STAR TEST results were enclosed in their End of the Year packets however if you have a question about your child's level please contact the school office at (504) 466-0591.
