Pearl River Talented Art students' work will be on exhibit for the month of October at the Columbia Theatre, 220 E. Thomas St. in Hammond. Should you wish to see the exhibit you may want to call the Theatre for times it is open. Three PRHS students placed and we are awaiting news of the dates available for the field trip to the House of Blues in New Orleans.
We are currently working on a variety of Oriental arts. Students carved personal bamboo drawing pens in two sizes. Keeping the "less is more" aesthetic in mind students are making a series of drawings using the pens. For the week of 10/12 students will complete mixed media drawings using pen and ink and color media washes.
Students have collected plant materials to use when making paper by hand. They have learned how to prepare materials by pressing or microwave drying petals. Each student will make a variety of papers by changing molds and materials. Once dried, their papers will be used for a variety of art projects including making a book and calligraphy.
Students have been asked to find and take to class a very interesting natural material. Items could be either inorganic materials such as rocks or shells or organic materials such as a beautiful tree branch. They will draw the item a few times, compose Haiku and mount the art and Haiku for display in the school library.
The Oriental arts unit culminates in students completing a silk painting on a scarf. They should be planning the design for it now.
Students are also asked to draw a design for all TAP students to use to silkscreen T-shirts. Each student will need to purchase his white cotton shirt or may make and silkscreen an apron in class. The silkscreen design will be selected by vote.
We have discussed students participating in a wreath construction project and auction party for charity. More news about that later.
I am available after school for students to make up work. Please feel free to call me should you have any questions or concerns.
