 2nd nine weeks: Assignments for English II
 
WEEK 1 :  1. Introduce class rules and forms. Expectations.
                  2. Begin short story unit and elements with graphic organizer.
                  3. Read  "The River, the Bass and Sheila Mant." Discuss suspense.
                  4. Vocab. and begin list of literary elements. Set up notebook. 
                  5. Quiz on short story and vocab..Intro theme of Appearance vs. Reality.
WEEK 2  : 1. Bring in newspaper articles on war and occupied countries.Begin reading
                      "Two Friends". Add "irony" to LE list and vocab.
                  2.  Read " The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty (handout). Suspense/irony.App. vs Real
                  3.  Trace short story elements of both stories and do notebook pgs.on grammar.
                  4.  Discuss sentence construction and do workbook pgs on Sub/Pred.
                  5.  Quiz on short stories and vocab.
Week  3  :  1. MLK Day
                  2.  Bring in Articles on Haiti and community involvement. Non-fiction elements.
                  3.  Write paragraph on importance of volunteering in community.Peer edit.
                  4.  Begin reading "Apollo 13" Discuss problems of living in space.
                  5.  Quiz on literary elements.
Week  4  :  1. Read articles about space travel in text. Bring in articles about Saints.
                  2. Graphic organizer  to aid in brain storming for persuasive essay.
                  3. Introduce topic for essay and how to write topic sentence.Write.
                  4. Read (satire)humor story by Dave Barry"Grammar Is/Ain't Important"(handout)
                      Do workbook pages on sentence construction and go over.
                  5. Quiz on sentence const. and short story. Pick up notebooks.Final draft essay.
 Week 5  :  1. Read short humor story by James Thurber (handout)Discuss elements.
                    "Appearance vs.Reality" elements.Read article @ Haiti.
                  2. Discuss personal experiences with embarrassing relatives. Brainstorm a story.
                  3. Begin writing personal narrative and peer edit.
                  4. Use computers to trace a carnival theme/ history. Bring articles @ Superbowl.
                  5. Final draft of story and play word games.
