As a writer and English teacher, my relationship with the English
language is one of the most important parts of my life. While speaking,
especially in public, still sometimes remains a challenge for me, reading
and writing, which have always been strengths of mine, have gotten stronger
and stronger as I have gotten older. Reading came easily to me and was a
source of comfort and companionship, especially when I was a teenager.
Writing has probably done no less than help save my life. After my husband
died suddenly of a heart attack, I decided that one thing I had to do before
I died was spend more time studying and writing poetry. That led me to go
back to college and earn two additional degrees in Engish with a specialty
in writing. One of them is a Master of Fine Arts degree from Penn State.
The confidence I have gained has allowed me to fulfill my lifelong dream of
being a high school English teacher. In my classes, and in the Writers'
Club here at PRHS, I work to help students understand the beauty and power
of the English language.
