Performance Task

Who Am I? A Family History
Unit 2 Performance Task -- Revised, 2009
Essential Questions: How does my past impact my values and beliefs? How are
the values of my parents and grandparents like/unlike my own?
Enduring Understandings: Looking at my roots helps me to better understand
who I am.
Assignment: You will interview family members to learn more about your
family history.
What is your cultural and ethnic heritage? When did your family immigrate to
this continent? Unless you are a pure Native American your family has a
history that precedes its establishment in the United States. Do you have any
interesting ancestors? What can your grandparents tell you about the early
days of your family? Do you have a family tree, a record of births and deaths
that documents your family? What are some of the stories that tell about your
family? This assignment requires some research. Call or write your family
members and ask for details. You might consider exploring the facts and
details about your immediate family. Who are the members of your family? What
can you tell about each one? How did Mom and Dad meet? What can they tell you
about their romance and decisions about life? Did you always live in the same
neighborhood? What are some of the events that highlight your family history?

Steps:
1.	Determine your approach/topic. (Examples: Military service,
genealogy, life when grandparents were young, your hero, family diversity,
family events such as births, deaths, etc.)
2. Conduct interview(s) with family members. Video, audio, or written
forms may be used.(See list of possible questions.)
3.	Take notes during your interview. ALL notes must be turned in as
documentation of your research.
4.	Write a least one (1) family history story to share with the class.
(Must be typed, 12 or 14 pt. type, Times Roman or Comic Sans only)
5.	Make an oral presentation to share your findings.
6.	Create a visual to accompany/enhance your oral presentation. (Family
tree with details, collage, poster, PowerPoint, video, family crest, etc.)

NOTE: This is a cross-curricular project. You will work on this assignment
in Mr. Heidelberg and Mrs. Moore’s classes and receive a grade in both ELA
and Social Studies.
