Drink Water! As singers we need to drink at least half our body weight
in room tempature water each day and plenty of rest for a strong voice.
Here's some facts that my voice coach, Chris Beatty | Nashville, TN
shared with his students:
~ IT'S ALL ABOUT WATER. Or, is it Coke? It might surprise some of you
that the human body is made up of 70% water. But if you look at your
beverage diet you would think it was 70% Coke or Pepsi. Some of
these comments and statistics are from an old article from Prevention
Magazine.
WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. This likely applies to
half world population.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is
often
mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much
as 3%.
4. One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost
100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger
of daytime fatigue. - Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of
water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of
sufferers. - A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term
memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer
screen or on a printed page.
6. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer
by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one in
50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day? Be sure to
drink it all day long. If you drink lots of water at one time that's can
hurt
you over time. Be consistent.
COKE
Background information: The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric
acid. Its pH is 2.8 and it will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. To carry
Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the
Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.
Before you take a drink read on.
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of
Coke in the patrol car to remove blood from the highway after a car
accident.
2. Put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will dissolve in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let
"the real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke
removes stains from vitreous china.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub
the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil
dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals pour Coca-Cola over the
terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
6. To loosen a rusted bolt apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the
rusted bolt for several minutes. 7. Coke will clean road haze from your
windshield.
This isn't an anti-Coke campaign. In fact there are times when a Coke
or Diet Coke really does taste good. (As least it used to.) This is a
MORE WATER CAMPAIGN, because we put ourselves in danger any
time we start to get dehydrated.
Here are some additional thoughts from Body Builder and
Trainer, Kevin Parrot at Personal Training Studios in Hampton, Virginia.
For those wanting to improve their weight you should know some facts
about water. Water suppresses the appetite naturally. It helps rid the
body of waste. Drinking enough water is the best treatment for fluid
retention. The more water you drink the less water you retain. So if you
want to lose weight drink plenty of water. Beyond the recommended
eight glasses of water per day, the over-weight person needs one
additional glass for every 15 to 25 pounds that they wish to lose. For
example, to lose 50 pounds you would need to drink 10 to 11 glasses of
water per day.
The body will not function properly without enough water. It can’t
metabolize stored fat efficiently. Retained water shows up as excess
weight. To get rid of excess water, you must drink more water. Drinking
water is essential to weight loss.
Thirsty yet?
~ Homework before coming to school each morning- eat a good
breakfast and singing or talk for 20 minutes before coming to school to
help warm-up their vocal muscles correctly for a healthy voice. As
singers, we must have our instrument ( our body) ready for the workout!
~ Students should be reviewing music theory skills such as note
names, rhythms and other new material. Making flash cards will help.
Don't forget you can turn those in for bonus points on each test day!
~ Review you music daily, focusing on good diction, tone, phrasing,
accents, rhythms and correct notes. Always find a way to improve each
day.
~ Singers remember your body is your instrument. Take care of your
instrument like an athlete takes care of their body. You are an athlete! A
healthy body = good singing.
