In 1987 I began my career as an educator teaching 5th grade ELA in Lexington,
Kentucky. In 1994, when my family moved to Shreveport, I taught 2nd grade
for several years. In 2000, I joined the Riverside staff and returned to 5th
grade ELA. I am very happy to begin this new school year!
There are several things you can do at home to help this to be a successful
year for your child.
• Avoid letting fifth grade be the year that you let your student be
responsible for themselves. Students this age are simply not ready to be
successful without nightly guidance from their parent.
• Be sure to check and sign your child’s planner EACH NIGHT. The planner is
multi-functional: Students write down homework and long term projects, and we
often write or staple notes for you in the planner. If you don’t open the
planner, chances are that the note is not going to make it to you.
• Tuesday Folders are very important. You will find samples of your student’s
class work, tests, and other important information sent home by the office.
Be sure to look over all papers, sign, and return to school the following
day. Graded assignments should not be kept at home; I must file them and keep
them on record for the year.
• Check your student’s school supplies regularly and keep them stocked.
Your continued support will help to assure that your student has a happy and
successful school year.
