Unit Description: This unit focuses on responding to the primary genres of the National Period of American Literature to discover how the literature relates to the historical context of the time. Essential Questions: Can students identify the primary characteristics of the national period and how they are reflected in the literature of the time? Can students demonstrate how the basic elements of short stories by writers like Washington Irving contribute to discovery of meaning in their works?
