Career Paths & Five-Year Plans

Louisiana State Law Act 1124 established that all students grade 8 through grade 12 must select and schedule classes around a chosen career path.   Career paths, separated into career clusters and areas of concentration in the cluster, are chosen by the student and parents. The student will then schedule courses from the cluster-concentration area in order to complete the career path by the end of his/her senior year. Based on the student's career interests, he/she will fill in a five-year plan, declaring the chosen career cluster-concentration.  During scheduling, the guidance counselors will schedule the student for the primary courses the student needs to complete the career path. Each year before scheduling, students and parents may review the previous year's career cluster-concentration and change it based on student career interest changes.  However, the goal is for the student to complete a career cluster-concentration by the end of the senior year; if the student's career path is changed each year, he/she may not have taken enough primary courses to complete a career path by the
senior year.  This should be discussed with the guidance counselors prior to scheduling to determine the best career path for the student. 

 
Please review the chart below that lists Salmen High School's career clusters and areas of concentration (also called career paths or career offerings).  Below that chart you will find another chart that lists the career cluster-concentrations with the primary courses and any certifications offered with that career path.  These can be used to schedule the primary courses for your career path.  They can also be used to assist you when filling out the five-year plan at the Louisiana ePortal site [please see the next paragraph for information on reaching ePortal for student planning].
 
Students and parents need to fill out a five-year plan.  Five-year Plans are located on the Louisiana ePortal site at the following URL:  https://www.laeportal.com/main.aspx.  The first time at the site both the student and the parent will have to register.  After registered, look for the "My Five Year Education Plan."
