SUMMER READING PROGRAM

”Chomp Down on some Great Books"

Dear Families,

            We invite your child to participate in the South Highlands Summer Reading Program, "Chomp Down on Some Great Books."  We believe that summer reading is an integral part of your child's success in school.  Reading during the summer should increase your child's vocabulary and enhance his/her reading skills.

            Attached you will find a summer reading log on which to write the books your child reads.  This is not a competition!  We just want to encourage summer reading and invite students who meet the minimum requirements to a special “Chomp Down on Some Great Books" celebration.  Please send a photo, no larger than 4x6 with your reading log for our bulletin board.

            You can find books at any public library, retail bookstores, or at

used bookstores.  Your child may count the same books that are read for the public library's reading program for South Highlands“Chomp Down on Some Great Books."   The minimum requirements are outlined below for grades your child will be entering next year:

First Grade:

* 17 books of your choice

* 2 Caldecott Award books

* 1 book about an animal that CHOMPS

(A total of 20 or more books)

Second Grade:

* 17 books of your choice

* 2 Caldecott Award books

* 1 book about an animal that CHOMPS

 (A total of 20 or more books)

Third Grade:

* 5 fiction books

* 7 books of your choice

* 3 non-fiction books including one book about an animal that CHOMPS

 (A total of 15 on your reading level books, at least 2 should be chapter books)

Fourth and Fifth:

*1 Newbery Award book

* 8 books of your choice

* 1 book about an animal that CHOMPS

 (A total of 10 on your reading level books, at least 5 should be chapter books)

            Please work with your child on making book selections.  A list of Caldecott and Newbery winners is available on our website, or from the public library. Reading capabilities of children on the same grade level vary widely, so choose books appropriate for your child.

            The attached reading record should be filled out completely and turned in during the first week of school to your child's new teacher.  Also, please snap a picture no larger than 4 x 6, put your name and homeroom on the back, and send it in for the bulletin board. All forms and photos are due Friday, August 21, 2009.
