Class Descriptions

English/ Spelling
Our English program continues the Shurley Method.  We pursue vocabulary, jingles,
and classifying sentences with a thorough understanding of the parts of speech.  Other language skills, grammar usage/mechanics, capitalization/ punctuation are taught and tested.  We’ll practice writing and improving sentences evolving into paragraphs and essays.  Assessments will be made regularly evaluating specific skills.

The Spelling program’s emphasis is on the structural convention of English spelling. Prefixes, suffixes, related words following spelling patterns and meaning are of special interest.

Students will work with a unit of 20 words each week.  Class work will be done on loose leaf paper and kept in the binder.  Correct spelling of the unit word in legible handwriting will be tested each week. (Practice writing the words.  Neatness counts!!!!)

Reading

Students will be assigned to read selections in our reading text. Vocabulary words, questions, writing activities, and workbook pages will be assigned for the selection.

Vocabulary Workshop

Our vocabulary book contains 16 units, each with 12 words.  One unit is covered every two weeks.  There is assigned class work and homework for Vocabulary Workshop.  The correct spelling and meaning of the words will be tested every other week.

Novels

Depending on the length of the novel, several chapters will be assigned each week or so.  Handouts with vocabulary, questions, and skill activities will be given for the assigned chapters.  On Novel Study day, comprehensive questions will be given to discuss in a group.  We will begin with SHILOH.  You will need a copy of your own.

Religion

In the fifth grade we will study the seven sacraments.  We study how God gave them to us, why, and how we use them as we seek the kingdom of God.

As we celebrate the Mass, we will become aware of the parts of the liturgy and how it becomes our perfect prayer.

We will use our textbook and read from scripture to become familiar with God’s teaching and how we can be an active part of the Catholic Church.

Homework will be given in Religion.  Reading of the chapters and studying the study guides will help in preparing for chapter tests.
