General Information
Welcome to Kindergarten! This is going to be a wonderful school year filled
with fun and adventure. Your child has been constantly learning since he/she
first entered this word, but now it will be happening in a more structured
situation with a teacher and teaching assistant, who will lovingly guide and
nurture your child. We strive to provide many positive learning experiences
to encourage students' skills, talents, and abilities as well as their self-
confidence. Establishing the basics and setting the right tone in
Kindergarten will lead to a life-long love of learning which will be mirrored
in the success of school years to come. We will see the children grow
physically, emotionally, socially, mentally, and most importantly,
spiritually. May God bless our children this year in Kindergarten!
ARRIVAL
School begins at 7:55 a.m. Please have your child in the classroom by 7:50
a.m. so that they will have time to unpack. Parents may accompany their child
to the classroom and help them to unpack on Wednesday and Thursday. In order
to begin our school day, we ask that all parents leave the classroom at the
sound of the 7:55 bell. Starting Friday, students will be expected to enter
the building through the middle or side door on their own.
TARDINESS
If your child is tardy, you must take him/her to the office and check in. A
late arrival does cause delays for the entire class. While we understand
unforeseen problems may occasionally arise; tardiness hurts your child as
well as the other children in the class. Please be on time. If you know your
child will not be in school the entire day, please send a note so that we may
be prepared for an early dismissal. This will save you time when you come to
the office and pick up your child. No Perfect Attendance awards are given and
we do not have a school nurse. If your child shows any signs of illness,
please keep your child home for his/her sake as well as for the sake of the
rest of the children.
ABSENTEE WORK:
Absentee work will be sent home with a sibling or to the office for pick-up,
but only if you call the office and request it. This work is not expected to
be returned. Please do the work with your child at home so that they are not
behind on any new skills or concepts learned in class.
DISMISSAL:
Kindergarten car riders are dismissed at 2:50 p.m. from the west entrance to
Presentation Hall near the Church and Parish Center. PLEASE BE PROMPT. No
parents are allowed to enter the school building at dismissal. This is not a
time for conferences. If you are late picking up your child, please go
directly to the cafeteria and wait for your child there. AT 3:15 P.M. ALL
REMAINING STUDENTS will be brought to After Care, which is located in the
cafeteria. A staff member will walk After Care students and bus students to
their destination. Please send a note letting us know if your child will be
going on the bus or to After Care.
IMPORTANT...If anyone other than a parent will be picking up a child, we will
need a note granting permission.
SNACKS:
Snacks will be eaten during morning recess. Please
send non-messy snacks such as: cheese and crackers, cookies, fruit,
vegetables, etc. Pudding and fruit cups may be eaten only at lunch, as no
spoons are allowed at snack time. Snacks should be a quick, nutritious,
finger food that does not make a mess. NO CANDY OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED FOR
LITTLE RECESS. Students will be allowed to get water when they come in from
the recess break. Snacks should be sent in a zip-loc type plastic bag or
individually wrapped WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME CLEARLY MARKED ON THE PACKAGE.
LUNCH:
Lunch will be served daily from 11:20-11:50 in the cafeteria, followed by
recess which ends at 12:05. Each child will be given a lunch number that
must be memorized. They must be able to tell the cafeteria manager their
lunch number when they purchase a full lunch or milk/juice. For the first
two weeks students will be wearing a nametag with their lunch number on it.
NO CANNED DRINKS ARE ALLOWED FOR LUNCH.
NAP:
Students will nap in the afternoon for approximately 30-45 minutes. They do
not have to sleep but are expected to lie down quietly without disturbing
others. Depending on our busy schedule, there may be days when the students
do not nap.
RED FOLDER:
PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD’S FOLDER EACH EVENING FOR IMPORTANT PAPERS. If there
is any daily work with corrections, please assist your child in learning the
concept. Remember to return the folder each day.
HOMEWORK:
Homework is usually assigned Monday through Thursday and will begin after
Labor Day. All homework is designed to enhance the curriculum. Whatever
your child is learning in school is reinforced by the homework for the week.
Please set aside a special place at home for your child to do his/her
homework. Written homework should be done in pencil only and returned in
the SCR red folder on the day it is due. Remember your child needs to study
reading/sight words daily. A cooperative effort between home and school
encourages learning. With your help and a consistent study time, your child
will progress rapidly.
P.E. UNIFORM:
GIRLS: Uniform shirt and plaid shorts (On cold days, girls may wear
tights).
BOYS: Uniform shirt and navy shorts (On cold days, boys may wear long socks
or long navy uniform slacks).
SCR OUTERWEAR:
Mark all clothing with your child’s name, especially sweatshirts, sweaters,
coats, and jackets (Use a Rub-A-Dub black marker and names will not wash
out). If the weather is cool, an SCR uniform sweatshirt or sweater must be
worn. These are the only cold-weather apparel permitted in the classroom.
Jackets or coats may be worn 0N TOP of the sweatshirt or sweater for recess.
Please refer to the SCR handbook.
REPORT CARDS:
Report cards are issued four times a year. Please sign and return the report
card within two school days. The report card will reflect your child’s
progress in the following areas: Religion, Reading Readiness, Language
Development, Handwriting, Math, Social Development, Work Habits, Motor
Development, and Enrichment Activities (Library, Music, French, Computer &
P.E.).
The grading scale on the report card will be:
+ = At Grade Level Expectations
Check = Approaching Grade Level Expectations
• = Below Grade Level Expectations
N = Not Assessed This Quarter
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES:
Parent/Teacher conferences are held twice a year. Each appointment is
scheduled for 10 minutes. Please be mindful of the time so that we may stay
on schedule. If more time is needed, we may arrange to meet again on another
day.
MASS:
Kindergarten students attend weekly Masses throughout the school year on
Wednesdays at 9:05. Parents are welcome to join us and sit with your child.
When facing the altar, we are seated on the far right side. Proper behavior
is expected in church. Do not allow your child to play with the Mass books or
kneelers. Please encourage your children to be big boys or girls by not
holding them or taking them to the restroom unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
MISSION MONEY AND FEED THE HUNGRY:
Mission money is collected daily from the students throughout the year. Non-
perishable food items are collected on the first Wednesday of each month,
known as “Feed the Hungry Day.” Please be generous and discuss the
importance of sharing with others.
ROOM MOTHER:
The Room Mothers for each class will work together and contact you to help
plan and organize special events throughout the year. We will be looking for
some additional Moms to volunteer to be our Art Mom, Mystery Reader Mom, etc.
Mystery Reader
Every other week, we will have Mystery Readers (You!) come to our class and
read to us. There will be a sign up sheet at Open House for those who wish to
volunteer. Some examples we have had in the past: Santa and his elves,
pumpkins, Leprachauns, Cupid, and each read books to go along with their
theme. If you choose to bring a suprise for the class, please do not bring
food. Some examples: pencils, stickers, small toys, etc. We like to keep our
Mystery Readers a secret to help add to the excitement!
SCHOOL CALENDAR:
Each child and parent must sign and return the SCR handbook contract found on
the last page of the school calendar/handbook; as well as, the Computer
contract. If at any time you are returning papers through a sibling that are
needed by the office, please send a note to let us know. Please refer to the
school calendar often for school regulations, holidays, and other important
information.
FIELD TRIP:
We are allowed one field trip. It will be in the spring. Details will follow.
CO-OP MEETINGS:
The Co-Op's purpose is to support and help the school. Meetings are open to
all members/parents and are scheduled for the third Thursday of September,
November, January, March, and May at 7:30 p.m. Sweatshirts and Book Store
items are sold before the meetings begin. Parents are eligible to win a cash
prize at the end of each meeting, and the winner must be present. Teachers
can also win a cash prize to purchase classroom items. This prize is awarded
to three teachers who have the most parents in attendance. Please try to
attend.
BIRTHDAYS:
In celebration of all of our children's birthdays, we will have monthly
birthday celebrations. On the first Friday of each month, we will celebrate
those children who were born in that particular month. Our birthday mom will
organize and contact you on what to bring for your child's celebration such
as: cupcakes, drinks, napkins, plates, or favors. If you are sending a cake,
please cut them into individual pieces prior to sending, as we are not
equipped in the classroom to do so. At the end of the year, we will designate
a day to celebrate the summer birthdays. Parents are not allowed to attend
the birthday celebrations because there is not a designated time for the
celebration, as it depends on the schedule for that day.
