Conduct

Responsibility as well as good conduct and consideration for others will
be stressed in Kindergarten. Your child deserves a safe and positive
learning environment and to ensure that academic growth does occur, the
following classroom discipline plan will allow each child to manage his/her
own behavior. It is important to begin building self-discipline by helping
the children understand that each boy and girl is in school to learn, and
that it is not fair to interfere with another child's learning. I encourage
positive attitudes in students towards themselves as well as their classmates
by using positive reinforcement and rewards at every opportunity.

At the beginning of the school year we spend a lot of time reviewing and
explaining the importance of our classroom rules. The children learn the
rules and experience the rewards for following them. They also learn what
happens when these rules are broken.

CLASSROOM RULES:

  1. Listen to the teacher.
  2. Follow directions.
  3. Raise your hand to speak.
  4. Stay in your desk.
  5. Obey all school rules.
  6. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  7. Use your indoor voice.
  8. Listen when someone else is speaking.
  9. Always be kind and polite.

*** Please stress the use of good manners at school as well as at home, and
encourage the practice of always trying to do your best.

HOPPING WITH GOOD BEHAVIOR

v Each student has his or her own frog on the bulletin board. Each day, students begin on the green lilly pad. As students choose to break classroom rules, they will move to the yellow, red, and blue lilly pads. Before having to move his or her frog, students will be given warnings in hopes to correct their behavior.

v Green Lilly Pad (No moves): The student’s behavior is appropriate. He or she is following both directions and rules. On their individual chart, the student will receive a frog stamp in the appropriate box.

v Yellow Section: the student has been warned verbally about his or her behavior and has chosen to break the rules anyway. On their individual chart, the student will receive a yellow stamp in the appopriate box.

v Red Section: The student has chosen to further break the rules. On their individual chart, the student will receive a red stamp in the appropriate box.

v Blue Section: The student has chosen to further break the rules. On their chart, the student will receive a blue stamp in the appropriate box.

Loss of fun time (centers, free play, etc.) will be the consequence for this move.

v If a student continues to break the classroom rules, the next step will be moving their frog to my desk. A note will be sent home to the parents, explaining their behavior. This note will be signed by a parent or guardian and returned the following day.

v Each child will have a monthly behavior chart that will remain in their St. Clement folder on the left hand side. Each day, we will mark a green, yellow, red, or blue stamp to record their behavior for that day. There will also be a rule sheet attached under the chart. If a child moves their frog, a corresponding number will be marked to explain their behavior. Please check their chart each day to keep track of your child’s behavior in the classroom. If needed, please reinforce good behaviors and manners at home to improve their behavior in school. Please do not remove this chart or rule sheet from the folder.

TREASURE CHEST

v We will do treasure chest on Fridays. In order for a child to be able to go to the treasure chest, he or she must have five green stamps on their behavior record. When the child goes to the treasure chest, a check will be placed to show the child went on that day. The counting of stamps will start over after the check. If the child does not have five stamps from the check, then he or she will not be able to go to the treasure chest.

v Each child is in a fish group (goldfish, angelfish, swordfish, tunafish, or redfish). Throughout the week, each group has opportunities to win marbles for their fish jar to reinforce good group behavior. At the end of the week, the students in the group with the most marbles will be receive a special treat.

FROG OF THE WEEK

v Each week we will have two “frogs of the week,” a boy and girl. The “frogs of the week” are chosen by the teacher based on their exceptional behavior throughout the week. The teacher will choose those students who are exhibiting qualities such as: interacting well with their peers, listening to directions, using kind words, helping others, etc. The child will create a “fish of the week” page, including interesting facts about themselves, and then share with the rest of their class. Each child will have a chance to be the "frog of the week."

** When your child is the "Frog of the Week" he or she may bring in an item to share for show and tell. It will be once a month. The item should be educational and fit in your child’s schoolbag. Refrain from sending very
delicate or fragile items, as I cannot guarantee their safe return. Your child should be able to describe the item and tell the class about it. Please assist your child in deciding on an appropriate Show and Tell item.
