There is no school on Monday, November 16.

Any student who wants to do picture re-takes must return the entire picture package on that day in order to get their picture taken again.  Picture re-takes are scheduled for Thursday, November 12 at 8 a.m. sharp! This is also the day for students who were absent on the original picture day to have their pictures taken.  Please make sure your child is here at school on time if this applies to you.

Students may wear their fair t-shirts on Fridays until the fair.

For the remainder of the year, handwriting grades will be based on cursive, not manuscript.  Since we do not start writing in cursive for quite a while still, the handwriting grade will no longer be on the spelling test.  Every week we will learn 2-4 new cursive letters.  At the end of the week, the children will write those letters on handwriting paper and that sheet will be graded. I am not going to give handwriting homework as I think it just becomes too excessive.  However, they do get excited about writing in cursive, so if you'd like to practice at home you may; just make sure that they are forming the letters properly when they do so.

Sine we are now in the second quarter, we expect the children to begin taking more responsibility now that they are fully aware of our routines.  Missed homework assignments and instances of a lack of class participation are now worth 3 points per infraction (instead of the 1 point that it cost them for the first quarter).

I sent home a yellow copy of sight words all second graders should know.  Please practice these words with your children until they know them.  We are having a big problem with students expecting to have many, many words on their tests read to them.  At the end of first grade, they were expected to be doing that for themselves.  While we will continue to help them read words through the end of the first quarter, we will have to quit doing this soon in order to encourage the independence.  Reading independently is a second grade skill that MUST be attained; they are expected to be able to read fluently when they go to third grade.  We practice phonics, sounding out, and reading vocabulary words for all subjects here in class.  Please make note of whether or not your child is having trouble with this at home and make sure to practice having them read independently at home as well.  In addition to the word list being sent home, please practice reading all reading, science, social studies, religion, and language vocabulary words, all spelling words, and any words that are recurring in math (difference, sum, etc.)  If it is a vocabulary word or a spelling word that we have studied, the children are expected to be able to read it on their own!  Thanks for all of your hard work!
