Class Descriptions

Religion

In the fifth grade we will study the seven sacraments.  We study how God gave them to us, why, and how we use them as we seek the Kingdom of God.

As we celebrate the Mass, we will become aware of the parts of the liturgy and how it becomes our perfect prayer.

We will use our textbook and read from scripture to become familiar with God’s teaching and how we can be an active part of the Catholic Church.

Homework will be given in Religion.  Reading of the chapters and studying the study guides will help in preparing for chapter tests.

Social Studies - 5th Grade

This year in Social Studies, you will discover information about the Native Americans, early explorers, and the colonies as they became a nation.  We will have fun as we study early America through various activities.

Your work will include reading in your textbook, a lesson review, and vocabulary.  Daily review of your class notes, lesson review questions, lesson handouts, and chapter reviews will provide ample preparation for the chapter tests.

Make sure that all lesson handouts and vocabulary go into the Social Studies section of your binder.  A word to the wise:  Don’t let lesson reviews get lost in your book bag; you won’t have them at test time.  They also frequently count as a homework grade.

Reading

Students will be assigned to read selections in our reading text.  Vocabulary words, questions, writing activities, and workbook pages will be assigned for the selection.

Novels

The novel will, for the most part, be read independently.  Depending on the length of the novel, several chapters will be assigned each week or so.  Handouts with vocabulary, questions, and skill activities will be given for the assigned chapters.  On Novel Study day, comprehensive questions will be given to discuss in a group.  We will begin with Shiloh. You will need your own copy of each novel.

The novels we will be reading are as follows:

  1. Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
  2. Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
  3. From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
  4. Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli

 Vocabulary Workshop

Our vocabulary book contains 16 units, each with 12 words. One unit is covered every two weeks.  There is assigned class work and homework for Vocabulary Workshop.  The correct spelling and meaning of the words will be tested every other week.
