which complement the curriculum.
The SADLIER’S WE BELIEVE program looked to the Catechism of the
Catholic Church for much of its inspiration and guidance. It presents major
faith statements accurately and age appropriately and is rich in instruction
on scripture, saints, and devotions. Children are taught to respond by
thinking about how they will act on what they have learned about God.
HARCOURT MATH (HARCOURT) The program begins with a review of basic addition
and subtraction and quickly moves into a focused and in-depth study of
multiplication and division facts and applications. The curriculum also
includes study of basic geometry, statistics and probability, and time and
money. This program builds the foundation for later success in formal algebra
courses. A wide variety of strategies and activities are used in an effort
to meet the varied learning styles and needs of the students.
THE SHURLEY METHOD - ENGLISH MADE EASY initially teaches students the parts
of speech by using definitions in jingle form. The rhythmic definitions are
sung by the class to help them remember the role of each part of speech.
Next, in a Question and Answer Flow a series of questions and answers
determines the role each word plays in a sentence. In this way parts of
speech are never studied in isolation. Once a concept is introduced it is
repeatedly applied in daily exercises throughout the year. Students are then
taught how to merge this strong skill foundation with the writing process.
SCOTT FORESMAN READING STREET – is composed of 50% fiction and 50% nonfiction
literature selections. In this series the following priority skills, which
are critical elements of reading, are emphasized: phonics (word
reading),fluency (words correct per minute), vocabulary (word knowledge), and
text comprehension (retelling). Easy, on-level, and challenge books provide
additional in-class, independent reading for students at all levels.
Workbooks provide practice for the priority skills.
SPELLING CONNECTIONS (ZANER-BLOSER) introduces students to high frequency
words used in their writing. Unit words relate to one concept, (such as
short vowel sounds) so spelling makes sense. Word study techniques are
taught within the framework of practice activities. The goal is to transfer
concepts learned in each unit to new words encountered later.
MC-GRAW-HILL SCIENCE provides a balanced coverage of three major science
strands --- life, physical, and earth science. Lessons build process skills
such as experimenting, classifying, observing, and predicting to solve
problems and evaluate solutions.
HARCOURT HORIZONS Louisiana: People and Communities (HARCOURT) is a multi
faceted study of social studies which develops an understanding of geography,
history, civics and government, economics, and culture. Throughout the book
the Louisiana connection is stressed. Map and globe skills are practiced, as
well as graphs and charts. Each of the five units includes a vocabulary list
and uses review questions to determine if students recall major points.
HANDWRITING (ZANER-BLOSER)
Zaner-Bloser uses simplified letterforms which are easy to read and write.
Using continuous strokes, the 4 Ss - ---size, shape, slant, and spacing are
Stressed.
