c. Where was the composer born?
d. Where did the composer study or learn about music?
e. What were some of the popular musical genres of this composer's lifetime
(for example: the symphony, the opera, chamber music, etc.)
f. What was this composer most famous for?
g. Tell something interesting about this composer's personal life – make
sure you can support your interesting facts or anecdotes with at least 2
inteenet or 1 hard copy source.
Students are required to have a visual display when they present this
information orally, either using Powerpoint or a poster.
2. Students must provide a listening example for their composer. They may
use Youtube, or a CD or cassette. If students need help finding an example,
they may see me during an Excel block to make arrangements for this. They
will need to be prepared to talk to the composer about their musical
selection, using the following guidelines:
a. Is it a symphony, a piano sonata, song, etc?
b. Which movement are you playing (if there is more than one)?
c. Was the piece written for a special occasion or for a particular
performance?
d. Is it in a major or minor key?
e. Does it evoke a particular emotion?
f. What type of instrument(s) does it use?
g. What do you like best about this piece of music?
Some students have a modern rock group. These students will need to provide
the same biographical information for each member of the group as required
above for composers. They also be sure to include changes in the group's
composition, and whether these musicians are still living or if they have
died.
