_Dear St. Tammany arts supporter,
This week, Governor Jindal announced in his Executive Budget for Louisiana, which goes into
effect July 1, 2009, an eighty three percent (83%) cut in the Decentralized Arts Funding grants
throughout the state. This reduction effectively zeros out the funding available to many arts
organizations in St. Tammany and St. Bernard parish. This letter is a call to immediate action
for all former DAF Grant recipients, current recipients, and all those associated with the arts
and arts funding in and around St. Tammany and St. Bernard Parishes. We need you to write to
your state legislators and explain what DAF funding means to your organization and our
surrounding community.
The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee is meeting daily, and the Louisiana Division of the Arts
is testifying before the Louisiana House Appropriations Committee on April 2nd. Immediate action
must be taken on this issue.
The new Executive Budget also contains a thirty one percent (31%) cut in the Statewide Arts
Grants, which make funding available to artists and arts organizations throughout our state.
Such cuts are not only difficult, they will effectively cripple the local arts organizations in
our parishes. DAF and SAG grants make it possible for artists and art educators to bring much
needed cultural enrichment to the citizens of our state. Without them, some organizations will
no longer be able to continue as viable entities, let alone continue to provide the range of
services offered.
In these trying economic times, creative use of available funds is extremely necessary, and cuts
in all areas of funding are not unusual. Such deep cuts to the arts in Louisiana, however, are
not prudent in the bigger picture of long term economic health. The arts as a part of the
overall cultural economy of Louisiana is the second largest industry in our state. Our cultural
economy is responsible for so many of the recent improvements we have seen in areas of
education, social improvements and overall well being of our population. To cut 83% of funding
for one of the most important assets of our state clearly requires attention.
As artists, arts organizations and arts supporters, now is the time to raise our collective
voice and make a difference. I am asking you to call and write to your state senators and
representatives. Write to the members of the Louisiana House Appropriations Committee. Write and
call our Governor. The arts community is historically the strongest grass roots organization
across the country. We must now use that strength to save many of our own. The arts are too
important to Louisiana to allow short term thinking to create long term damage.
Please join with us and help restore funding to our programs. Thank you for your diligence in
this matter. Please find attached the names, phone numbers and email addresses of our Louisiana
legislators who have a say in rectifying this situation. In addition, please find attached a
list of DAF funded projects and organizations. I would ask you to forward all of this important
information to your board members, organization and arts supporters. If we join our efforts
together, our collective chance of success in this endeavor is much higher. Thank you for your
effort.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Bushel

Loeber Center for Dramatic Arts is a 501(c)3 non profit organization with the mission to
train the mind and body of the actor through the study of dramatic craft, to inspire the actor
to develop self-discipline and
self-expression, and to encourage in the actor the growth of imagination and confidence.
Here there is no set “method” or “style Spend the day with Loeber!
.” Instead, Loeber’s approach varies with the students, helping them to find the lessons within
themselves. With each repetition on a scene or exercise, the actors learn more—how to give
more, how to commit more, how to think about the scene, how to discover, how to find more within
themselves.
Our spring workshop strengthens the actor’s natural instincts. Loeber instructors and guest
instructors focus on characterization, physicality; text analysis; cold reading techniques;
improvisation;
stage combat; and using the tools of the actor’s voice, body and imagination.
