This year I celebrate my 21st year as an English/Foreign Language teacher.
My first seven years were here at ZHS, followed by 11 years at Catholic High
School in Baton Rouge. Prior to teaching, I worked as a journalist covering
state government.
I hold a Master's degree in English Education; a Bachelor of Science in
French and Social Studies Education; and certification in Spanish.
I am married to Larry Michaud, formerly the Public Information Officer for
the state Department of Agriculture and Forestry, now retired. We reside in
Baton Rouge.
We have two children:
Lauren, 24, a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy and Millsaps College in
Jackson, MS. Previously employed as a business analyst for the Mississippi
Technology Alliance in Jackson, she relocates this year to Boston to begin a
Masters of Business Communication program at Emerson Collge.
Our son, Armand, 22, graduated from Catholic High in 2003, and will
graduate in December from LSU with a degree in Accounting.
I became a teacher for one reason: I love kids and enjoy working with
them. I believe all children can learn, and that each student possesses
individual talents, strengths, interests and challenges. As much as
possible, I strive to individualize my instruction in order to connect to
each student's strengths, as well as to develop their areas of
weakness.
I also believe it is my job to assist you in "training up your child in the
way that he should go." That includes teaching him or her character,
integrity, good manners and self-discipline. Your support in this joint
effort is, of course, crucial. This is why we have an academic Honor Code
in our class that our students have been proud to be a part of and that our
parents have strongly supported. This is also why I require my students to
behave like civilized ladies and gentlemen in my class and to treat me and
each other with respect.
If your child will commit to you and to me to give us 100% effort, I can
guarantee you his or her success in my class. I have a great deal of
experience in working with students with high, medium and low aptitude for
foreign language and English, as well as those with learning disabilities.
It has been my experience that any student who exhibits the maturity, work
ethic and commitment to succeed, will do so. It is my pleasure to help them
achieve that.
VERY IMPORTANT! IF YOUR CHILD IS COLLEGE BOUND:
If your child intends to go to college, he or she will have to successfully
complete two years of the same foreign language to fulfill most colleges'
basic entrance requirements. This means that, while foreign language is
technically considered an "elective", if your child is college-bound, it is
actually a requirement. If he or she is seeking TOPS, he or she must do so
with at least a grade of "B", in order to maintain minimum grade point
average (GPA) requirements.
I urge you to discuss these requirements with your child now as we begin the
new school year so that we will all be prepared to work together as a team
to help your child achieve his or her goals for the class.
I'll be sending home a "Goal Sheet" which will ask your child to identify
the reason he's taking the class and the grade he is hoping to earn. You
and he/she will both be asked to sign it, thus literally putting us all "on
the same page."
While Spanish and French are and will be taught as a college-bound elective,
I welcome any student who takes the class for more practical life-skill
reasons, or just because it's fun to learn a foreign language.
With your help and support, I am sure that this 2007-08 school year will be
a successful one for your child and I look forward to it with great
excitement.
Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or other
information that will help me to help your child.
