| WELCOME TO SECOND SEMESTER AND THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF ENGLISH I. WE WILL BE
STUDYING POETRY, "ROMEO AND JULIET," AND "THE ODYSSEY." IN ADDITION, WE WILL
CONTINUE OUR EMPHASIS ON READING, WHICH IS THE FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS IN
EVERYTHING YOU WILL DO IN HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND.
January 8-11: On Tuesday we will get reacquainted with "A Man Named Dave"
and
outline our second semester's work. On Wednesday Mrs. Johnson and I will
be
attending a conference designed to help us with our English I classes, so Mr.
Mayhall will be your sub that day. We will use that day to get our textbooks
and AR books for the new semester. Thursday and Friday will allow us to
implement what we learn on Wednesday, so we will plunge directly into our
unit
on poetry.
January 14-18: In our continuation of the study of poetry, we will look at
several elements of the genre. The class will have a brief quiz on Unit 1 on
Tuesday and will visit the library on Thursday for a lesson on how to choose
an AR book using a program called "Destiny." We will look at some writings
of
Eve Merriam, e.e. Cummings and Edgar Allen Poe.
January 28-Feb. 1, 2008: On Monday afternoon we will have a unit test on the
sounds of poetry. The rest of the week we will be studying imagery, literal
and figurative language, similes and metaphors. There will be a brief
discussion on Thursday about the Holocaust.
February 7-8: We will study personification for these two days and continue
our work on poetry. In addition, your iLEAP packet No. 3 is due on
Thursday. We will review that on that day.
February 11-15: This week we will complete our unit on poetry. The final
type
of poem we will study will be the haiku, a Japanese form of poetry. On
Tuesday we will have a review and quiz on the sights of poetry. Vocabulary,
writing and "A Man Named Dave" will round out the week. In addition, we will
continue our study of items needed for the iLEAP test which begins March 10.
February 25-29: This week we will have a quiz on Book 9 of "The Odyssey," as
well as study Books 10 and 11. On several days we will write our impressions
of the experiences of Odysseus and his men. There will be some time for AR
in
class, but let me encourage you to maintain the goal of reading 60 minutes a
day on your own.
March 31-April 4: This week we will be studying an exciting short story
entitled "The Most Dangerous Game." We'll look at the different elements of
the short story, write a character analysis and write a new ending for the
story. In addition, we'll work on our AR and continue our adventure with "A
Man Named Dave." Hang on! We only have a few weeks left!
April 7-11: We will study another short story, "The Interlopers." On
Friday we will have Jacques Doucet from Channel 9 sports with us for Career
Day.
April 21-25: Here's the week you've been asking for--"Romeo and Juliet" by
William Shakespeare. In fact, it will take us several weeks to complete this
tragic story of "two star-crossed lovers" and their destiny. By the time we
reach the end of this story, it will be time for the final exam and summer
vacation!!!
April 28-May 2: We will continue to discover the comedy, tragedy and drama of
Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." In addition, there will be excerpts from "A
Man Called Dave," and we will finish our AR work for the year on Wednesday.
Two vocabulary tests from "R & J" will help keep us on track with our
vocabulary and reading.
May 12-16: With our final exam next week, we will spend this week wrapping up
"Romeo and Juliet." In addition, we will work on a study guide for the final
and STAR test on Thursday afternoon. Don't wait until the last minute to
prepare! Email me or stop by after class if you have any questions.
May 19-22: Monday REVIEW for FINAL. Tuesday 7:20 a.m. FINAL EXAM!!!
