Writing a Complete Multi-Paragraph Answer to a Social Studies Constructed
Response Question
First Paragraph - Introduction
1. Begin your answer with a Thesis Statement that simply restates the question
you are answering. Draw a squiggly line (~~~~~~) under your thesis statement.
2. Write one or two sentences that answer the question. Highlight these sentences.
Second Paragraph - Body
3. Begin a new paragraph. Write a Topic Sentence that informs your reader of
the part of the answer this paragraph will discuss. (Example: The author of
Document 1 is a Loyalist who believes that the king should be respected and
obeyed.) Highlight this topic sentence. 
4. Include a brief quotation from the Document(s) that accompany the question.
Make sure that your quotation supports what you said your topic sentence.
Circle the quotation.
5. Write a sentence that explains how your quote supports your topic sentence.
(Don’t explain what the quotation means. Explain how the words you quoted back
up your topic sentence.) Underline this sentence.
6. Add more details from the Document(s) or from your background knowledge (as

theaters.  They had parties and balls.
