Academic Support Team
The Academic Support Team (AST) provides either in-class or out of class support for students who need extra help with their academic subjects for whatever reason. Members of the team work closely with classroom teachers to develop and implement a plan that will best meet the needs of the student.
When a teacher has concerns about a child, and feels that some intervention might be beneficial, a referral is given to the Child Study Team (CST). After some basic assessments are made, the CST decides what action will be taken. This year, the CST includes Sandra Hite, Michael Friel, John Darcy, Tamar Avedissian, Nada Fakhoury, Alex Ray, and Barbara Rand and the student's homeroom teacher.
Parent communication and support is a top priority. Parents will be contacted before any plan is
implemented. They are involved initially in dialogue with the classroom teacher and then with the AST member as assessments are done and plans are made. Parents are considered partners in these endeavors designed to augment academic progress.
