What does the Guidance Counselor do?

I provide help for your child to succeed in school. This may be through 
individual meetings or groups meetings. I may add support to their teacher. 
I may discuss behavior management in the classroom and/or at home with 
parents. Possibly your child needs a behavior plan to help him/her succeed.
The counselors do various things to help students. (click on Guidance)

How do I get my child to meet with Mrs. McCallum?

You may call me at 594-3425. I am here everyday during school hours. Please 
leave me a message. You may also request my help through your child's 
teacher and they will contact me. The parent could also send a note in with 
student. Sometimes it's very helpful to know if there have been significant 
changes, such as a death of a loved one, or a pet; separation of parents, 
Nana's sick in the hospital, Dad is going to Iraq, etc.

As a parent, can I meet with the counselor?

Absolutely! I often meet with parents for support. It helps to know how the 
student is at home vs. in school. There may be family issues that are 
impacting their ability to focus in school. My door is open, please let me 
know if I can help.

Is the help Confidential?

I let the students know that everything they share with me remains private 
except... 1. if someone is going to hurt them 2. they are going to hurt 
someone else and 3. they are going to hurt themselves. If any of these 
things are shared, they know I have to tell someone to keep them safe. Often 
times if we beleive it is something a parent should know, the student and I 
will go over what I will be sharing with their parent so they are informed 
and trust remains.
